Definitions
- the present invention concerns a chassis with a vibration damping device applicable to an exterior rear-view mirror assembly of a motor vehicle, and more particularly a chassis that can be obtained by injection molding and which integrates a damping configuration that is part of the same part. of said vibration damping device.
- Exterior mirrors for a motor vehicle comprising a chassis attached to the vehicle and a movable plate to which a mirror is fixed are well known.
- the movable plate is connected to said chassis by means of a kinematic linkage of the patella type that provides freedom of rotation with respect to two mutually perpendicular axes and generally parallel to the mirror reflecting surface. Both axes intersect at a point that constitutes the center of both turns and, therefore, remains motionless, so that the point of attachment of the movable plate to the support structure is located in said center.
- the rear-view mirror includes an adjustment mechanism composed of drive and movement transmission means, for example mounted in a box supported on the chassis.
- the transmission means have mobile elements connected to two points of the mobile plate separated from the " link point.
- An activation of the said drive and transmission means selectively move the connection points of the mobile plate and thereby give it a movement of combined tilt on said two coordinate axes in order to select a position adjusted to the needs of a user.
- a damping configuration in the form of a metal elastic clamp fixed by means of a screw or other means of attachment to the chassis, which acts by clamping with the possibility of sliding a
- This clamp is usually a standard part in the market made of stainless steel for springs, and can be mounted on both metal and plastic chassis, while the tongue is integral to the mobile plate and is generally obtained by injection molding of a material plastic or thermoplastic
- this vibration damping device based on a metal clamp attached to the chassis suffers from several drawbacks.
- the stainless steel spring clamp itself is expensive, and also implies a multiplicity of components that make storage, logistics and assembly operations more expensive.
- this same multiplicity of components and their assembly operation increases the risk of failures that may affect the reliability of the product.
- the friction contact between the clamp and the tongue can produce an unpleasant metallic noise, which usually forces grease to be applied during assembly.
- the different materials from which the multiple pieces are made that is, chassis, clamp, screw, etc., make recycling of the assembly at the end of its useful life very difficult.
- a vibration damping device which incorporates a single integral damping arm a part that forms the chassis, and which has a free end permanently in contact with a surface of a flexible tongue that protrudes from the movable plate.
- this contact on a single side of the tongue is capable of neutralizing a majority of vibration frequencies, it favors some harmonics that result in poor vibration damping.
- the material normally used for the manufacture of mobile plate does not guarantee elasticity and becomes unstable over time, especially under medium or high temperatures. For this reason, the result may be insufficient damping, which may even be zero, after a certain time of exposure of the tongue to climatic factors. Exhibition of the invention
- the present invention contributes to overcoming the above and other inconveniences by providing a chassis with vibration damping device applicable to the exterior rearview mirror of a motor vehicle, said chassis being the type that is adapted to support a movable plate, bearing at least one mirror, linked to the chassis by means of a ball-type link that allows a combined tilt on two coordinate axes, where a tongue protruding from the movable plate is pressed with the possibility of sliding through a damping configuration attached to the chassis in order to dampen vibrations.
- the chassis of the present invention is characterized in that said damping configuration comprises at least one pair of integral elastic arms of the chassis and forming a single piece thereof, said elastic arms being arranged as a clamp to make pressure contact on opposite faces of said tongue.
- said elastic arms as a clamp extend from chassis and have respective free ends mutually facing and separated by a distance less than a thickness of said tongue.
- the chassis is properly configured to be obtained by injection molding, preferably of a plastic or thermoplastic material. This construction can cover a greater part of the applications, since currently about 80% of the support chassis of the automobile rear-view mirrors are made by molding a plastic material.
- the elasticity of the arms is determined by the thickness of its cross section in combination with the characteristics of the selected material.
- the arms of the clamp can have a substantially elastic behavior while the chassis is substantially rigid, despite being of the same material.
- the chassis of the present invention provides multiple advantages.
- the damping configuration and the chassis integrated in a single piece provides an important economic saving by reduction of components and the consequent elimination of the corresponding assembly operations.
- this increases the general reliability of the rearview mirror by eliminating the risk of failure due to assembly defects.
- this avoids possible metallic noise and greatly facilitates recycling.
- Fig. 1 is a partially sectioned side elevation view of a chassis with a vibration damping device according to the closest state of the art, coupled to a mobile plate bearing a mirror;
- Fig. 2 is a partially sectioned side elevational view of a chassis with vibration damping device according to an embodiment of the present invention, coupled to a mobile plate bearing a mirror; Y
- Fig. 3 is a plan view of the chassis of Fig. 2.
- a chassis 21 with vibration damping device applicable to an exterior rearview mirror of a motor vehicle, according to the state of the art.
- Said chassis 21 is adapted to support a mobile plate 23 that has at least one mirror 29 fixed.
- the assembly of said mobile plate 23 is carried out by means of a ball-type link that allows a combined tilting of the mobile plate 23 on two coordinate axes.
- a box is housed that houses an adjustment mechanism comprising movement transmission means connected to the mobile plate 23 varying its position.
- the housing that houses said adjustment mechanism and the aforementioned ball-type link are conventional and have been schematically represented together by dashed lines 22 in Fig. 1.
- the mobile plate 23 incorporates a tongue 24 protruding from a lower part thereof facing the chassis 21.
- Said tongue 24 is adapted to be pressed with the possibility of sliding in a damping configuration 25 attached to the chassis 1.
- the mentioned damping configuration 25 comprises an elastic clamp 30, manufactured from a stainless steel sheet for springs.
- Said clamp 30 comprises a pair of arms 31 adapted to press against both sides of the tongue 24 and an appendix 32 through which the clamp 30 is fixed to the chassis 21 by means of a screw 33 or other equivalent joining means.
- a chassis 1 is shown with a vibration damping device applicable to an exterior rear-view mirror assembly of a motor vehicle according to the present invention, which incorporates a new damping configuration 5 designed to alleviate some of the drawbacks of the elastic clamp. 30 of the state of the art, set forth above.
- said chassis 1 is adapted to support a mobile plate 3, carrying at least one mirror 9.
- This mobile plate 3 is linked to chassis 1 by means of a ball-type link that allows a tilting of the mobile plate 3 combined on two coordinate axes.
- a chassis 1 can be installed on the chassis 1 in which a position adjustment mechanism is included that includes motion transmission means connected to the mobile plate to vary its position.
- the drive of the mentioned movement transmission means can be of any of the different types well known in the art of the sector. Given that the configuration of the adjustment mechanism and the aforementioned patella link is conventional and is not part of the object of the present invention, its detailed description will be omitted and its representation indicated jointly schematically by a box 2 in dashed lines in Fig. 2.
- the actuation of the position adjustment mechanism can be carried out by one or two electric motors included in said box 2, or by one or more electric motors located in a separate place and connected by a transmission by flexible cables to the means of the box 2, or by manually operated controls connected to the means of the box 2 by flexible cables or other movement transmission.
- the adjustment mechanism is not essential, since mirror assemblies are also known in which such adjustment mechanism has been omitted and where the variation of the position of the movable plate 3 is carried out directly manually. Such is the case, for example, of relatively large rearview mirrors for vans and commercial vehicles in which the mobile plate is simply supported by the ball-type link, in which case the vibration damping device can be decisive.
- a tongue 4 protrudes, which is pressed with the possibility of sliding through a damping configuration 5 connected to the chassis 1 object of the present invention.
- This damping configuration 5 comprises at least one pair of elastic arms 6 arranged as a clamp to make pressure contact on opposite faces of said tongue 4.
- said elastic arms 6 are integral to the chassis 1, that is, the chassis 1 and the elastic arms 6 are formed from a single piece, which is properly configured to be obtained by injection molding, preferably of a plastic or thermoplastic material.
- the elastic arms 6 extend from the chassis 1 towards the movable plate 3 and have respective free ends 7 mutually facing and separated by a distance less than a thickness of said tongue 4, such that the tongue 4 produces a slight elastic deformation of the elastic arms 6 that ensures a pressure contact.
- the degree of elasticity of the elastic arms 6 can be adequately adapted to the requirements of its vibration damping function by selecting a cross-sectional area of the elastic arms 6 in accordance with characteristics of the material of the part that forms the chassis 1.
- the tongue has a curved configuration with a center of curvature located substantially at a crossing point of said two coordinate axes, that is, at the center of tilt of the ball-type link.
- the elastic arms 6 are born from inner walls of a cavity 8 passing from one side to the other of the chassis 1 and are inclined in opposite directions convergent towards said free ends 7, which have opposite protrusions that define respective surfaces of contact with the tongue 4.
