Definitions
- the invention relates to a device for optical measurement of the thickness of a first medium, at least partially transparent for an incident beam and covering a second medium, the device comprising means for generating the incident light beam, so as to form a beam reflected by the surface of the first medium and a beam scattered by the surface of the second medium, means for detecting the reflected beam and the scattered beam, processing means, connected to the detection means, comprising means for measuring the the difference between the reflected beam and the scattered beam, and means for determining the thickness of the first medium as a function of the difference measured.
- the measurement of the thickness of a first medium, at least partially transparent for incident wavelengths and covering a second medium, for example the measurement of the thickness of a trickle of water on a road, is well known from the prior art.
- One method is to use sensors to measure the thickness of a layer of water on the ground. It is possible to use a sensor inserted into the soil or a sensor measuring the evolution of the solidification temperature of the water.
- US Pat. No. 5,105,157 which relates to a radar type system, for measuring the average thickness of a film of water on the surface of a road.
- the system comprises at least two subsets, each having a transmitter and a receiver and operating at different frequencies. It uses microwave reflection on the surface of the water film. Radar behavior and accuracy are highly dependent on the environment in which it operates.
- US Pat. No. 4,687,333 describes another method of measuring thickness, via an optical device using the absorption of the wavelength of a light projected onto a film of water.
- the projected light is reflected by the water film and converted into an electrical signal via a photoelectric sensor.
- the device calculates the thickness of the water film as a function of the electrical signal thus recovered.
- This device is relatively complex and the accuracy of the measurement is strongly dependent on the absorption coefficient of the water film.
- DE 198 05 200 discloses another method of measuring the thickness of a transparent object, using the rising edge of a first reflection signal, detected by detection means, to determine the position of the emitting source or detection means, with respect to the object.
- a second reflection signal, superimposed on the first is also detected by the detection means, the measurement method takes into account the falling edge of this second signal, to correct and adjust the value of the previously calculated position.
- the value of the thickness is deduced only from the measurements of the position of the emitting source or the detection means, with respect to the object. This results in a calculation that depends strongly on the environmental conditions in which the detection means and the emitting source are located.
- the known devices for optical measurement of the thickness of a first medium, at least partially transparent, covering a second non-transparent medium conventionally comprise means for generating a light beam, means for detecting the beam reflected by the at least partially transparent medium and the beam diffused by the non-transparent medium and processing means, connected to the detection means, for measuring the difference between the two beams and determining the thickness of the first medium as a function of the measured difference, thanks to a predetermined mathematical formula.
- Such fixed devices are generally used for smooth surfaces.
- the use of such a device carried by an object in motion, changing altitude relative to the surface of the first medium introduces significant errors in the calculations.
- the errors are acceptable as long as the movement of the car is rectilinear, but become too great when cornering or braking, when the car crashes and causes a change in altitude of the device.
- the object of the invention is to overcome these drawbacks and its object is to provide an optical measuring device that accurately determines the thickness of a medium.
- this object is achieved by the appended claims and, more particularly, by the fact that the detection means comprise means for measuring the position of at least one of the reflected and scattered beams, the processing means comprising means for determining, as a function of the measured position, the distance between the detection means and the surface of the second medium, and means for correcting the value of the thickness of the first medium, as a function of said distance.
- FIG. 1 schematically represents a particular embodiment of a device according to the invention.
- FIG. 2 is a diagram illustrating a particular mode of the processing circuit of the device according to FIG.
- FIG. 3 diagrammatically represents an alternative embodiment of a device according to the invention.
- FIG. 4 represents a particular application comprising a device according to the invention. Description of particular embodiments
- the optical measuring device 1 is intended to measure the thickness e of a first medium 2, at least partially transparent, for example a film of water, completely covering a second medium 3, for example a road asphalted.
- an incident light beam 4 preferably collimated, is generated by any appropriate means, for example by a laser 5, and is sent towards the ground with a predetermined angle of incidence.
- Part of the incident beam 4 is reflected by the free surface of the first medium 2, so as to form a reflected beam 6, while another part of the incident beam 4 is transmitted in the thickness e of the first medium 2.
- This part the incident beam 4 is diffused by the upper surface of the second medium 3, in contact with the first medium 2, throughout the upper half-space.
- the reflected beam 6 and a portion 7 of the scattered beam are then, in known manner, captured by any appropriate detection means, for example by a photosensitive spatial detector.
- the detector is, for example, constituted by a photosensitive bar 8, of charge coupled device (CCD) type, and is located above the surface of the first medium 2.
- CCD charge coupled device
- This type of detector conventionally comprises a plurality of elements , which deliver a more or less intense electric signal depending on the quantity of photons received. This makes it possible to rapidly measure values O 1 and ⁇ 2 representative of the positions of the impact of the beams 6 and 7 on the bar 8, corresponding to the location of the two maxima of light intensity measured by the bar 8. As shown in FIG.
- a processing circuit 9, connected to the strip 8, determines the values ⁇ -, and ⁇ 2 representative of the position of the points of impact of the reflected beam 6 and the diffused beam 7, on the bar 8, and deduces therefrom (block 10) the gap existing between the beams 6 and 7. It then determines (block 11) the thickness e of the first medium 2 as a function of the difference measured. Indeed, the difference measured on the bar 8 is directly related to the thickness e of the first medium 2, by a mathematical equation of the type e k ⁇ - ⁇ 2 ), with k constant of proportionality and O 1 , ⁇ 2 the measured values representative of the positions of the images of the two beams 6 and 7 on the bar 8.
- the processing circuit 9 performs a correction of the measurement of the thickness e taking into account the distance H separating the detector (strip 8) from the upper surface of the second medium 3.
- the processing circuit 9 also determines (block 12) the distance H, according to the known principle of the optical triangulation, from the position of the images of the reflected beam 6 or beam diffused 7 on the bar 8, or even advantageously the images of the two beams 6 and 7 on the bar 8, to make the measurement more robust.
- the processing circuit 9 determines (block 12), from the values O 1 and ⁇ 2 , the distance H between the bar 8, preferably between the center of gravity of the bar 8, and the upper surface of the second medium 3 ( figure 1).
- a reference distance H 0 is predetermined by triangulation, in a calibration phase, when the device 1 is at rest.
- H - H 0 k '( ⁇ (t) - ⁇ (t 0 )), where k 'is a constant of proportionality and ⁇ (t) and ⁇ (t 0 ) are the values of ⁇ 1 or ⁇ 2 representing the positions of one of the beams 6 and 7 on the bar 8 , respectively at time t and during its calibration.
- any variation in the distance H, related to variations in the profile of the second medium 3, in particular during the displacement of the device 1 along the media 2 and 3, is taken into account.
- the processing circuit 9 corrects (block 13) the value of the thickness e initially calculated, as a function of the distance H.
- the device 1 thus makes it possible to determine a corrected thickness e 0 of the first medium 2 which is much more accurate and more representative of the media 2 and 3, than the value e calculated, in a conventional manner, solely as a function of the difference between the beams 6 and 7.
- the device 1 also makes it possible to follow the evolution of the distance H along the horizontal displacement of the device 1, which makes it possible simultaneously to obtain, at each measurement instant, both the corrected thickness e c of the first medium 2 and the distance H between the bar 8 and the upper surface of the second medium 3.
- a device 1 about 250mm long, located about 100mm above a rough surface 3 covered with a film of water 2, and which emits a light beam 4 with an angle d incidence close to 45 °, allows to detect a thickness variation e of the water film of the order of 10O ⁇ m with a photosensitive bar 8 having an inter-pixel pitch of 60 ⁇ m.
- Such an optical measuring device 1 provides, in particular, the following advantages.
- the measurement of the thickness e is performed precisely, without contact with the first medium 2 and therefore does not disturb its environment.
- the principle The optical system used by the device 1 makes it possible to follow in real time the evolution of the thickness e of the medium 2, when the device 1 moves horizontally above the surface of the medium 2, precisely by taking into account the the distance H.
- the calculation of the distance H is carried out without resorting to an additional measuring device, since the device 1 uses the same values O 1 and ⁇ 2 representative of the positions of the beams 6 and 7 on the strip 8.
- the measurement method used by the device 1 operating on positioning measurements O 1 , ⁇ 2 of light peaks on the bar 8, it is freed from any amplitude measurement, in particular, fluctuations in intensity of the incident beam 4.
- the optical measuring device 1 differs from the previous embodiment in the presence of focusing means of the reflected beam 6 and the scattered beam 7 on the strip 8.
- a convergent lens 14 is placed between the first medium 2 and the photosensitive strip 8, so as to converge the reflected beam 6 and the scattered beam 7 on the strip 8.
- the photosensitive strip 8 As a function of the relative positions of the lens 14, the photosensitive strip 8 relative to the first medium 2, the angle of incidence of the beam 4 and the resolution of the photosensitive detector, it is then possible to act on the resolution and on the accuracy of the measurements ⁇ -, and ⁇ 2 of the reflected beam 6 and the scattered beam 7, for a determined distance H.
- the second medium 3 may be any surface capable of diffusing the incident light beam 4 and the first medium 2 may be all liquid or solid medium, provided that it is sufficiently transparent for the wavelength of the incident light beam 4 and the intensity of the beam reflected by the medium 2 is not negligible compared to the amplitude of the beam transmitted in 2. These two conditions are necessary so that the two maxima measured by the bar 8 are sufficiently detached from the background noise picked up by the bar 8.
- the device 1 described above is not limited to a thickness range e of the first medium 2, nor to a range of distance H separating the upper surface of the second medium 3 from the bar 8.
- the choice of components of device 1 and their size depends directly on the intended application and expected performance.
- FIG. 4 A preferred application for the device 1 according to the invention is shown in FIG. 4.
- the device 1 is mounted under a vehicle 15, in order to measure in real time the thickness e of the water film on a road and thus to provide information, possibly in parallel with the distance H, to a system for managing the dynamic behavior of the vehicle 15.
- Another application may relate to an ergonomic housing in the form of a hand tool comprising the device 1 according to the invention, to allow a user to quickly measure and without prior calibration the thickness of an ice layer on the wings of a plane.
- the device 1 can also be used to estimate the surface condition of a rough object covered with a liquid or a solid.
- the device can be implemented to quantify the surface state of the bottom of a tank containing, for example, a corrosive liquid product, which would prohibit the use of any another device that needs to be totally or partially immersed in this liquid to perform the same type of measurement.
