Definitions
- the invention relates to a cover cap for a dovetail-shaped mounting rail of a handgun, the cover cap being provided on one of its two opposing surfaces on both sides with an elongated engagement rail (preamble of claim 1).
- Handguns including handguns, are nowadays equipped with one or more mounting rails with a dovetail cross-section, on which a telescopic sight, laser aiming device, spotlight, night aiming device or the like can be attached. Many of these devices must be readjusted after they have been installed and each time they are installed again.
- covers or cover caps are pushed onto the corresponding mounting rails from the front, which are locked by spring devices and then cover the unused mounting rails or their rear parts.
- These cover caps are designed as flat covers, on one surface of which an engagement rail is formed on both sides. With these engagement rails, the cover cap can be pushed under the edges of the dovetail formation of a mounting rail.
- Such a cover cap actually succeeds in eliminating the handling problems that arise.
- it is disadvantageous that a device which is attached to the front part of a mounting rail must be removed before the cover cap for the rear part of the mounting rail can be pushed on.
- Front here means the direction pointing in the weft direction.
- mounting rails the end of which has been set up to slide on a device, the opposite applies, since the covers have to be pushed on from behind.
- the invention relates to both types of mounting rails.
- the object of the invention is to develop the known cover so that it is simplified and also the above-mentioned disadvantage is eliminated.
- the cover cap is resiliently deformable and that the two engagement rails approach one another in the unloaded state (claim 1).
- the cover cap does not have to be slid onto the mounting rail from the front (or rear) as before, but can simply be clipped or snapped onto it.
- a visor cover cap made of sheet metal is already known from German patent DE 299 535, which is latched on both sides in two longitudinal grooves of the visor. However, this cover cap does not sit firmly on the visor under tension, but must be easy to remove by folding up the visor carrier. This cover cap is therefore poorly suited as a cover for a mounting rail.
- a cover is also known from German utility model DE 90 02 289.4 Ul, which can be put over the telescopic sight, breech and trigger and is held together by means of Velcro strips. This cover is not at all suitable for a mounting rail.
- cover cap is used in a receiving rail, on the front part of which a target device or the like. is attached, then it does not have to be removed, but the cover cap can simply be pressed onto the free part of the mounting rail and then sits securely there.
- the cover cap can be detached from the receiving rail again by vigorously bending an engagement rail outwards. The cap can then be removed without having to remove a device sitting on the mounting rail.
- a preferred development of the invention consists in that a shark projection is formed on the surface carrying the engagement rails (claim 2).
- the shark protrusion is designed to engage in a counter-training in or on the mounting rail.
- the retaining projection engages with the counter-formation and thus prevents the cover cap from sliding in the longitudinal direction from the mounting rail unless a target device or the like is attached to its end.
- the holding projection is designed as a protuberance of an engagement projection (claim 3).
- This further development is set up for mounting rails which have transverse grooves for fastening devices.
- the cover cap can have a simple, square surface. However, it is preferred that their corners are rounded (claim 4). This reduces the risk of the shooter sticking to the cover cap with his sleeve and tearing it off the mounting rail.
- the cover cap is formed in one piece from plastic (claim 5).
- This plastic cap can be produced economically and simply, is light, does not oxidize and does not damage the rail surface. It also has the advantage that it can be easily shortened if necessary. For this purpose, markings can even be formed, which are then not visible when the cover cap is attached.
- cover caps of the invention can be made in different lengths to accommodate equipment that can be mounted on mounting rails. However, shortened unit cover caps can also be produced, which can then be snapped onto the sections of the mounting rails to be covered in the required number one after the other.
- the engagement rails need not be continuous; it is sufficient if individual projections are provided instead of a continuous rail, which ensure that the cover cap sits securely on the mounting rail.
- the object of the invention is explained in more detail with reference to an exemplary embodiment and the attached schematic drawing, the only figure of which shows an enlarged cross section through a plastic cover cap according to the invention.
- the cover cap consists of a plate 1 which is slightly curved in the unloaded state.
- the axis of symmetry 7 of the curvature is perpendicular to the plane of the drawing.
- One surface of the plate has longitudinal, mutually parallel engagement rails 3, which are arranged at the same distance on both sides of the axis of symmetry 7.
- the engagement rails 3 each have a projecting ledge 5 at their free end, at a distance from the plate 1.
- the projecting strips 5 of both engagement rails 3 face each other. They are arranged and designed so that they can engage behind a side edge of a (not shown) mounting rail with a dovetail cross section, which is attached to the weapon (not shown).
- a projection 9 is formed adjacent to one of the engagement rails 3, the length of which corresponds to the width of a transverse groove in the receiving rail.
- the cover cap of the invention is attached to a mounting rail of a weapon in the following manner:
- one of the two engagement rails 3 is hooked laterally over the side edge of a receiving rail.
- the engagement rail 3, which carries the projection 9, is expediently chosen, and this projection 9 is inserted into a transverse groove in the receiving rail.
- the projecting bar 5 now engages behind the projecting side edge of the receiving rail over its entire length.
- the cap is bent about its axis of symmetry 7 over the flat design of the plate 1 in the direction of the arrows so that it receives a curvature that the the curvature shown in the drawing is opposite.
- the distance between the projecting strips 5 is increased to such an extent that it slightly exceeds the distance between the side edges of the receiving rail.
- the cover cap can then also be brought with the second, projecting strip 3 over the associated side edge of the receiving rail.
- the plate 1 has an overall flat arrangement and presses the engagement rails 3 with their projecting strips 5 laterally against and behind the side edges of the receiving rail. Since the plate 1 retains its resilience, it strives to always maintain its contact pressure.
- the projection 9 engages in a transverse groove of the receiving rail and prevents the cover cap from slipping in its longitudinal direction.
- the cover cap sits firmly on the mounting rail without wobbling or rattling.
- the cover cap is removed in the reverse order of the processes described above, by first bending the plate 1 in the direction of the arrow and then simply removing it.
- the surface of the plate 1 facing away from the engagement rails 3 can have ribs and other configurations which increase their rigidity but do not hinder the resilient bending in the direction of the arrow.
- the cover cap of the drawing is made of not too hard, permanently resilient plastic, which does not scratch or damage the mounting rail, but protects it from damage.
