Definitions

  • the invention relates to an apparatus for welding cylindrical pieces and axially symmetrical parts, said apparatus comprising: - an electrode adaptor consisting of a shaft, which supplies welding current to a welding electrode and which is rotatable around its longitudinal axis and reciprocable in axial direction;
  • - a shielding gas chamber in which the electrode adaptor is insertable for welding; - positioning and fastening elements for bodies to be welded, which are located in the shielding gas chamber and by which the bodies to be welded are fastenable such that their axes lie in a common plane, but at an angle, typically at a 90° angle, relative to each other;
  • a plate-like, preferably disc-shaped cartridge which is provided with the positioning and fastening elements and/or which constitutes a portion of the positioning and fastening elements.
  • fig. 1 shows an apparatus of the invention in vertical section
  • fig. 2 shows in a plan view a cartridge for an apparatus of the invention, wherein pieces A, B, C, D to be welded, depicted in dash-and-dot lines, can be positioned and fastened for welding.
  • a horizontal, elongated electrode adaptor 1 is in the form of a shaft, which supplies welding current to a welding electrode 2 and which can be rotated around its longitudinal axis and moved back and forth. Means for operating the electrode adaptor 1 are described in more detail in the cited publication WO 99/55486 and, thus, shall not be explained further in this context.
  • the electrode adaptor 1 is introducible into a shielding gas chamber 3, only a small portion of which is shown in fig. 1 but which in practice constitutes a closed chamber of cavity.
  • the chamber 3 is naturally provided with an appropriate cover in view of opening the chamber for placing and removing the pieces A-D to be welded, and positioning and fastening elements 4, 14-18 therefor, in and from the chamber 3.
  • the pieces A-D to be welded are mountable on the positioning and fastening elements 4, 14-18 in such a way that the pieces A, B, C have centre axes of revolution Al, Bl thereof (or the ends of the elbow pipe D and the flanges to be attached thereto have centre axes of revolution Al, Bl thereof) in a common plane, but at an angle relative to each other.
  • a typical angle between the axes is 90°, when dealing with a conventional branch tubing or a 90° elbow pipe.
  • any other angle between the axes Al, Bl may also be relevant, e.g. 45°, depending on pieces to be joined.
  • a pipe B has its collar fitted with a pipe A by means of a circular weld joint AB, and the other end of the pipe B is fitted with a flange C by means of a weld joint BC.
  • a pipe B has its collar fitted with a pipe A by means of a circular weld joint AB, and the other end of the pipe B is fitted with a flange C by means of a weld joint BC.
  • the positioning and fastening elements 14-18 are mounted on a disc-shaped cartridge 4, which itself constitutes a portion of the positioning and fastening elements as the cartridge 4 is releasably attached to a cartridge base 5.
  • the cartridge base 5 is rotatably bearing-mounted inside a bushing-like bearing block 7 by means of bearings 6.
  • a nut 23 fastens the bearing base 5 to the bearings 6, and thereby to the bearing block 7, which is in turn secured in the shielding gas chamber 3 by means of screws intended for holes 22.
  • the cartridge base 5, and the cartridge 4 fastened thereto are bearing-mounted rotatably relative to the shielding gas chamber 3, such that an axis of rotation R is perpendicular to the plane defined by the axes Al, Bl of pieces to be welded.
  • Suitable frame elements 21 are used for fitting the shielding gas chamber 3 with a pivoted cylinder 20, which by way of a trunnion 19 rotates the cartridge base 5 about the axis R.
  • said axes Al, Bl, lying at a 90° angle relative to each other are brought alternately onto a common axis which coincides with the axis of the electrode adaptor 1.
  • the 90° switch angle will be sufficient in terms of capability to manage both cross directions of branch tubings and the ends of 90° elbow pipes. If, however, a piece to be welded is such that the electrode adaptor 1 cannot be pushed therethrough and welding is required at both ends of the piece, the cartridge base 5 and the cartridge 4 must be designed to be rotatable through 180° about the axis R. In the case of fig. 2, welding can be performed at both ends of the pipe B by moving the electrode adaptor 1 in axial direction, without having to rotate the cartridge 4.
  • the disc-shaped cartridge 4 has its rim provided with fastening formations 17, 14a for a releasable and replaceable attachment of the positioning and fastening elements 15, 18 thereto.
  • the fastening formations include vertical guide slots 17 on either side of the axes Al, Bl.
  • the fastening and positioning elements 18 can be dropped from above into the guide slots 17 for alignment with the axes Al, Bl, whereby the ends of the tubular pieces A, B to be welded, and possible extra pieces to be fastened to these ends, can be securely braced in position.
  • the replaceable positioning and fastening elements 18 are sized and designed for receiving the ends of pieces to be secured at any time.
  • the sizing and design thereof are made compatible with the sizing and design of pieces to be welded.
  • the disc-shaped cartridge 4 is provided with plate-like base, which is encircled by a skirt bead 14 extending above and below the plane of the base plate.
  • the skirt bead 14 can be completely encircling, as shown in fig. 2, or just partially encircling, as shown in fig. 1.
  • a section of the skirt bead 14, extending above the plane of the base plate, has its inner circle provided with a groove 14a for receiving a flange 15a for a detached fastening element 15, which immobilizes the fastening element 15 as a screw 15b is tightened against pieces to be secured (in the present case, against a side of the pipe B slightly above the centre axis Bl).
  • the cartridge 4 From the top surface of the cartridge base 5 extend upwards one or more index and fastening fingers 11.
  • the cartridge 4 has its base plate provided with one or more coinciding holes 11a for passing the finger 11 therethrough.
  • the finger 11 has its top end provided with a clamping ring mounting slot 12, whereby the cartridge 4 can be retained in contact with the cartridge base 5, even when rotating the shielding gas chamber 3 around the electrode adaptor 1, the cartridge 4 finding itself below the cartridge base 5 during such revolution.
  • the cartridge 4 has its base provided with three openings 10 for delivering shielding gas into the shielding gas chamber 3.
  • the openings 10 are in communication with a ring channel 9, which in turn is in communication with a shielding gas inlet channel 8.
  • the ring channel 9 is constituted by a slot present in the top surface of the bearing block 7 for the cartridge base 5.
  • the shielding gas inlet channel 8 is also included in the bearing block 7.
  • the cartridge 4 has its ring bead 14 provided with slots or recesses 16, coinciding with the axes Al, Bl and intended for the electrode adaptor 1.
  • the slots or recesses 16 can be substantially shallower than what is depicted, provided that the electrode adaptor 1 is made sure to be extracted from or inserted in the cartridge at an angle of rotation, at which the welding electrode 2 points upwards. All that is required between the electrode adaptor 1 and the cartridge 4 is an air gap of a few millimeters for electrically insulating the adaptor 1 from the cartridge 4.
  • the cartridge 4 has the bottom rim of its bead-like skirt 14 encircling a collar flange associated with the top surface of the cartridge base 5 and the top end of the bearing block 7. This design assists and facilitates setting the cartridge 4 in its position inside the shielding gas chamber 3.
