- the invention relates to a shellfish-collecting device of the kind put into the sea to catch spat of shellfish in its pelagic phase of life, during which the spat follows the motion of the water in order to settle, after some time, in a permanent growing-place in order to grow further, this permanent growing-place being formed in this case by the shellfish-collecting device or several shellfish-collecting devices, together forming an installation for the catching and farming of shellfish spat.
- Shellfish-collecting devices of the kind in question thus serve to be used in the farming of various species of shellfish, for example blue mussels, wherein the stock for the farming, the eggs, spat, is caught and "collected” in nature itself.
- shellfish-collecting devices of the kind in question a generation of shellfish, for example blue mussels, starts when one or more shellfish-collecting devices is/are put into the sea in the spawning period of the respective type of shellfish, in order to catch shellfish spat in its pelagic period of life, during which the spat is drifting freely about and is following the motion of the water, to become lodged finally in a suitable, stationary growing-place .
- shellfish-collecting devices form a kind of barriers that pelagic spat of shellfish will come against and fix itself to, in order then to remain lodged on the shellfish- collecting device in question, and take nourishment from the water flowing past at any time.

- a very simple but less efficient shellfish-collecting device of the kind in question consists of a rope hanging down into the sea, either vertically from an above-lying float or in a curve between two points of attachment near the water surface. It is known to use strips of seine (mesh resembling a fishnet) instead of ropes. In a third embodiment a rope is passed through meshes along each strip of seine to benefit the attachment area for the shellfish spat. This provides somewhat improved efficiency, but it has turned out to be impossible to exploit the growth potential at a farming- location by means of shellfish-collecting devices of this known type.
- the object of the present invention has been to provide a shellfish-collecting device of the specified kind, formed to provide sufficient "stocking" of spat, and at the o same time ensure good utilization of the supply of nutrients and oxygen at a farming location.

- a polyethylene tube 16, 100 m long is used as the float means, from which the headline 12 of the shellfish net 10, which is the carrying line of the net, is suspended by means of straps 18, so that the headline 12 and its extensions 12a and 12b absorb tensile loads in order to reduce the strain on the farming body 16.
- the shellfish-collecting net of the embodiment shown is assumed to have a depth equalling about 2 metres.
- the mesh width should be in the range of 150-400 millimetres, and the thread diameter should be in the range of 5-12 millimetres.

- a sinker line 14 may have the same length as the buoyancy tube 16.
- the headline 12 with extensions 12a, 12b may constitute about 130 metres totally.

- a hem or elongate stocking filled with sand along the foot line may serve as a sinker means.
- Weights of stainless steel or iron, wire or reinforcement bars of carbon steel may possibly replace the sand stocking version. Weighting per meter of foot line may for example amount to 0,5 kg/m.
- the specified range of mesh widths of the net and the range of thread diameters are critical to the present invention, because it is the extremely coarse-meshed seine of extremely thick thread, resulting from these mesh widths and thread thicknesses, that ensures the best conditions of growing for the lodged shellfish, through permanently good flow conditions for water bringing nutrients as well as oxygen to the shellfish growing on the seine, even when the shellfish are big and when the shellfish are sitting close together on the seine.
