- motor vehicles are equipped with pedals for controlling certain devices, such as brakes and clutch. It is also known that such control pedals, in case of vehicle collision against an obstacle, may hit the limbs of the driver and cause lesions.
- a first aim of the present invention is to prevent the driver from suffering, in case of frontal collisions, damages to the lower limbs caused by the vehicle pedals.
- solutions to the above mentioned problem are being studied by the major motor vehicle manufacturers. Such solutions generally provide for the pedal deformation or employ systems allowing the pedal release from the vehicle body.
- a second aim of the present invention is therefore to provide a mechanism which is operative also in case of a light collision.
- DE-C 196 17 372 discloses a brake pedal associated with a safety mechanism that is operated by a pyrotechnic gas generator controlled by a collision detector, and that, in case of collision, provides for eliminating a rigid coupling between the brake pedal and a control rod of the brake system.
- the gas generator acts on the link between the brake pedal arm and the control rod so as to to allow the pivot of that link to freely slide on the control rod in case of continued pressure of the foot on the pedal.
- the pedal arm and the control rod remain joined together after operation of the safety mechanism.
- a pedal equipped with a safety mechanism which, when operated, causes the ejection of the pivot pin linking the pedal arm and the control rod, thereby resulting in the separation of such arm from the rod.

- End portion 1 1" of the cylinder opposite to flanged end portion 11', is externally threaded to allow screwing a nut 13 for locking cylinder 1 1 on arm 2 of the brake pedal. Screws 8 engaging in arm 2 of the brake pedal are provided to prevent said nut 13 from becoming unscrewed. Similarly, locking of flanged end portion 1 1 ' is obtained through screws 16 engaging in arm 2 of the brake pedal.
- a piston 40 is inserted within the axial cavity of cylinder 1 1 and has a portion 40" projecting from cylinder 11 so as to retain, through flanged end 40', rod 6 which is pivotally mounted onto piston 40.
- a gas generating device 30 is also inserted within the axial cavity of cylinder 11, on the opposite side with respect to piston 40.
- Gas generating device 30 may be one of the well known devices used, for instance, in safety belt pretensioning devices or in air bags of vehicles. Said gas generating devices comprise a chamber containing a compound in which, upon the passage of an electric current, a chemical reaction resulting in gas generation is started.
- flanged end 11 ' is hermetically sealed by a cover 14 through screws 19 screwed in threaded bores 20 formed on flanged end 11' of cylinder 11.
- Electric cables 21 for triggering device 30 are led to the outside through cover 14 and are protected by means of a cap 18 of plastic material.
- An electronic control unit which is used for actuating the pretensioning devices and the air bags, can be programmed to send the triggering signal also to gas generating device 30 of release mechanism 10.
- said electronic control unit can send the triggering signal to the gas generating devices provided in the vehicle safety systems, such as pretensioning devices, air bags etc., including the release mechanism of the invention.
- one or more blind holes 22 are provided around the edge of flanged end portion 11 ' of cylinder 1 1 , and can be engaged by a suitable tool.

- clips 15 can also be provided, which are pivotally mounted at 23 around the edge of nut 13 and which grasp flanged end 40' of piston 40.
- a cable 26 made of steel or other resistant material is provided. Said cable is retained at one end by a screw 24 screwed into a threaded bore 25 formed on flanged end 40' of piston 40, and at the other end by a screw 27 screwed on nut 13.

- the brake pedal, released from rod 6, has exploited the gap, that generally is of at least about ten centimetres, to freely move forward and reach the vehicle body floor.
- Piston 40 ejected from cylinder 11 is retained by cable 26.
- the impact between the released brake pedal and the vehicle body can be dampened by arranging a pad of resilient material on the vehicle body floor, or by an air bag device provided on the body floor, as already suggested by firm Pars which belongs to Siemens group.
- a lubricated bush (not shown) can be arranged between piston 40 and rod 6 to assist in the ejection of piston 40 from rod 6.
- an electrically operated valve can be provided which, upon operation of mechanism 10, will keep the hydraulic circuit of the braking system pressurised, thereby preventing the operation of mechanism 10 from resulting in the release of the vehicle brakes.
