- thermal transfer is meant any process for transferring the ink of a ribbon by means of a thermal source, including therefore the sublimation process.
- this includes an electrostatic developer drum on which is formed, by an electrically charged roller, a layer of electric charges.
- the laser scans each generator that passes to form a latent image according to the data that controls it.
- the generators of the roller then pass opposite a pigment or toner cartridge, the particles of the latter are attracted by the remaining charges and the latent image is thus revealed so that its pigment particles are gradually deposited on a sheet moving against a regenerator of the roller.
- An oven then makes the toner penetrate the paper to fix it definitively, after regulating the thickness of the pigment by a blade with adjustable potential.
- the quality of the image depends on all the settings of the various voltages of the above elements and the temperature of the oven, depending on the type of pigment, its manufacturer and the printer manufacturer.
- this optimal set of settings varies depending on the percentage of pigment remaining in the cassette that contains it.
- the printer automatically prints a test pattern and an optical sensor determines the quality of the result obtained, to empirically determine a substantially optimal set of settings.
- the sensor only provides relatively poor information, 2 given the number of adjustment parameters, so that the overall adjustment is only coarse and it offers no guarantee of long-term reliability.
- the thermal source of the printer using plain paper and a thermal transfer printing ribbon, comprises a writing head comprising a plurality of heating elements electrically controlled by logical information.

- the circuit 3 is here a card carrying an electronic chip 4 which cooperates, by contact areas of the card 3, with a connector 15 of the printer connected to a logic 14 for controlling the head 13.
- the smart card 3 can thus be read by this logic 14 so that the latter grasps, in the memory of the chip 4, the parameters or control characteristics of the head 13, such as the type of ink of the ribbon 6, mentioned at the beginning.
- the smart card 3 therefore stores the control data and offers access to their reading by the logic 14.
- the data entry circuit 4 can be arranged on a removable support card such as a smart card and, in this case, the user plates or 4 introduces the capture smart card (3, 4), onto or into a connector (15) which can then be integrated into the logic 14.
- the chip 4 can control the interface 16, by the connector 15, to establish a connection with the server, in order to download the logic 14 by the command data appropriate to the ribbon of the cartridge 1. For this, the chip 4 transmits on line the call number of the server then, once the communication has been established, it transmits data identifying the type of cartridge, such as a reference number. This number serves as an internal address for the server to select the appropriate head command data 13 and send them back to the logic 14, through the interface 16.

- the chip card 3 is associated with a cartridge of printing pigment (toner).
- the control card 3 control data then includes various control sets for adjusting the voltages of various rollers or drums mentioned at the start and the temperature of the oven, as a function of the pigment in the cassette.
- the influence of hygrometry can also be modeled and taken into account from readings from a sensor.
- the logic 14 comprises a microprocessor associated with a memory containing data identifying the type of the printer. The logic 14 thus selects the command set, of the smart card 3, which relates to the printer.
- the smart card 3 comprises, for each set of commands, several data blocks, or tables, each representing the optimal set as a function of the emptying rate of the pigment cassette, for example originally, after one thousand impressions and after two thousand impressions.
- the logic 14 counts the number of prints and thus performs an update of the optimal set of parameters, possibly by interpolation between two successive sets.
- the smart card 3 having from the outset provided the identity of the cassette to the logic 14, and therefore its capacity in number of prints, the logic 14 commands the display of a corresponding alarm message, on a fax screen, when the cassette is almost empty.
- the chip 4 which, in addition to memorizing the data for an intelligent management of the settings, performs the tasks, described above, of the logic 14.
- the intelligence is therefore then practically entirely in the smart card 3, with regard to the settings, the logic 14 does not retransmit the settings to the slave elements and provides the information to the smart card 3.
- This kind of intelligent control from the smart card 3 is also valid for any other consumable product, to ensure improved, optimal management of the printer.
