Definitions
- the invention relates to a rotary spray atomizer for applying electrically conductive paint, in particular water-based paint, to surfaces with a housing in which a drive motor is arranged for the rotary actuation of a spray head attached to the front and connected to a paint supply, which dispenses the supplied paint as a result of rotation in a spray mist. and with at least two concentrically arranged electrodes extending parallel to the longitudinal axis of the housing towards the front, fed by at least one high-voltage source and accommodated in electrode holders, which produce an electric field which acts on the spray mist emitted by the spray head against the application surface.
- Rotary spray atomizers have long been known in the prior art for electrostatic coating with electrically conductive paint (DE 31 30 096 C2 or DE 31 51 929 C2).
- the paint to be applied is fed to a rotatably mounted spray head and driven by a motor, preferably by a motor operated with compressed air, and is thrown off due to the centrifugal force caused by the rotation.
- An electrical field generated around the earthed spray head is used, which is generated with the help of concentrically arranged tip electrodes, which are supplied by a common high-voltage source.
- the ejected paint droplets are charged in the electrical field that forms between the high-voltage electrodes and the grounded spray head by ions that are created by ionization processes at the tip electrodes.
- the surface to be coated is switched to a lower potential, usually earth, so that due to the resulting potential difference, the color particles charged by the electric field are accelerated towards the application surface, where they stick.
- the geometry of the tip electrodes is never completely the same, the field strengths in front of the individual tip electrodes and thus the ionization current are never the same. This causes an uneven charging of the paint droplets around the atomizer and increases the likelihood of contamination. This non-uniformity is exacerbated by wear and dirt during operation. With the previous technology, the different field strengths at the tip electrodes cannot be corrected.
- a pluggable cascade is arranged as a high-voltage source in each electrode holder, which feeds the associated electrode, which is respectively arranged on the front.
- the high voltage therefore only applies to the tip of the electrode holder
- This type of voltage supply ensures that long lines of high-voltage supply with a voltage of approx. 100 kV are avoided and, on the other hand, that the locally arranged high-voltage generator can be easily replaced at any time. This significantly improves operational availability
- the voltage supply to the high-voltage source arranged in each electrode holder is provided by a low-voltage direct-voltage source directly adjacent to the rotary atomizer, for example an accumulator, or via a low-voltage line, thus restricting the need for complex high-voltage insulation to the electrode holder
- the housing of the rotary atomizer is insulated in accordance with the degree of protection insulated housing known in installation technology, the retained metallic rotor shaft being used at least in sections as a conductor for the necessary grounding, a current flow through the air gaps in the bearings not takes place because the housing is insulated and is accordingly at free potential, that is to say that it has no potential difference from that of the rotor shaft
- the high-voltage source which is arranged in each of the electrode holders and is intended to supply the associated electrode, is designed as a cascade consisting of diodes and capacitors, which serves as a voltage amplifier.
- a transformer and an inverter can also be integrated into the high-voltage source, which generates the alternating voltage required to supply the cascade from the direct current (low voltage) supply.
- measuring elements for cascade current and cascade voltage are provided.
- the electrode holder is advantageously provided with a spring element which is arranged between the electrode and the cascade.
- Contact needles which work on the one hand with the electrode and on the other hand with the cascade, ensure the electrical connection between the cascade and the electrode.
- the resilient loading on the one hand the contact security is increased and at the same time the easy interchangeability of the cascade is guaranteed.
- each electrode holder is designed to be removable and connected to the associated housing connection by means of a union nut or by means of a bayonet lock, sealing rings being used to avoid contact problems as a result of moisture or dirt entering the gaps between the respective electrode holder and the connection for this purpose on the housing of the rotary atomizer are used.
- six electrode holders are evenly spaced around the housing, the front end of which is designed as a tip, which receives the associated electrode.
- the radial distance between the housing and an electrode holder can be set so that it corresponds at most to the diameter of an electrode holder. 5
- the length of an electrode holder corresponds to at least five times its diameter.
- the electrode holders are advantageously arranged on a ring which concentrically surrounds the housing.
- the electrode holders can also be arranged on holding arms which are attached radially to the housing.
- each electrode can be regulated separately. This ensures uniform charging of the paint droplets.
- the configuration of the high-voltage supply according to the invention allows simple, if appropriate permanent, monitoring of the electrical parameters in the low-voltage range, namely on the supply line, any faults that occur are immediately recognized and displayed, so that the necessary remedial measures can be started immediately.
- Figure 1 is an overview of a rotary spray atomizer according to the invention in longitudinal section.
- FIG. 2 shows a rotary atomizer divided along the longitudinal axis with an electrode holder according to the invention shown in longitudinal section and
- Fig. 3 shows a split along the longitudinal axis, shown in partial section
- Rotary atomizer with an electrode holder Rotary atomizer with an electrode holder.
- FIG. 1 shows a spray atomizer 10 for processing electrically conductive application materials with a housing 12, with a spray head 11 attached at the front and two diametrically opposed electrodes 13, which on the free ends 18 of electrode holders 24 facing the front of the housing 12 are arranged.
- the electrode holders 24 are arranged axially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the housing 12 on a ring 16 concentrically adjoining the rear of the housing 12.
- an electrode holder 24 consists of a high-voltage generator 17, which is accommodated in a housing 15, and a receptacle 14 for the electrode 13
- Contact pin 23 conducts the high voltage from the high-voltage generator 17 to the electrode receptacle 14.
- a reliable contact to the electrode 13 is ensured via a spring element 18, which is designed here as a helical compression spring.
- the high-voltage generator is connected to a low-voltage supply line 19 on the ring with a plug contact 20.
- the electrode receptacle 14 is screwed onto the housing 15 of the high-voltage generator 17, so that the electrode can be replaced without having to change the electrode holder 24 completely.
- the high-voltage generator 17 integrated in the housing 15 is interchangeably inserted in the adjoining ring 16.
- the attachment is carried out by means of a union nut 21 with thread or with a bayonet lock.
- 16 O-rings 22 are arranged between the electrode holder 24 and the concentric ring 16.
- a control and / or control device can be integrated in the low-voltage supply line 19, by means of which the electrical parameters can be set, monitored and corrected if necessary. 7
- FIG. 3 shows a partial section through the housing, through the drive 40 designed as a turbine and the spray head 11.
- the drive shaft is designed as a metallic hollow shaft 46 and is supported in the likewise conductive turbine housing 44. However, there is no galvanic connection between the shaft 46 and the turbine housing 44; both are separated from one another by an air gap 45.
- the turbine housing 44 is insulated
- the current is commutated by the shaft 46 via an earthed ring 48.
- the turbine housing 44 is thus at a free potential and a current flow through the air gap 45 is avoided.
- the ring is made of a material, for example carbon, which tends to have little spattering in combination with the shaft material, preferably steel.
