Definitions
- the present invention relates to an optical disc composed of two elementary discs glued one against the other, each elementary disc containing at least one transparent substrate with an information face provided with surface micro-alterations distributed along a spiral track or concentric tracks and intended to be read optically using a laser beam.
- optical disc in English Digital Video Disc.
- This new type of optical disc allows thanks to a specifically developed technique to have a storage capacity greater than 4.7 Giga Bytes per side of information, which allows to store beyond two hours of digital video compressed according to the standard MPEG2 Video.
- the high density of the optical disc also allows applications in the computer field.
- the compact disc is approximately 1.2 mm thick and consists of a transparent substrate comprising an information face provided with micro-alterations in the form of micro-cuvettes or micro-projections distributed over a spiral track.
- the information side is covered with a reflective metallic layer which is in turn covered by a protective layer on the outer side of which is then affixed a label indicating the content of the disc.
- the DVD disc consists of two elementary discs each about 0.6 mm thick. The two elementary discs are glued back to back, on the side of their respective information face if it is present, by a thin layer of glue, which results in a disc of thickness approximately 1.2 mm.
- the thickness of the substrate through which the laser beam passes is 1.2 mm and 0.6 mm respectively for the compact disc and for the DVD disc.
- a player designed only for the DVD disc is not compatible for playing compact discs.
- the backward compatibility of DVD players makes it possible to read compact discs, it is not the same for conventional compact disc players which cannot in any case read DVD discs, since such players do not include an electronic assembly and a specific laser for reading DVD discs.
- the object of the present invention is to solve this compatibility problem for reading compact discs and DVD discs by proposing a simple and economical solution.
- the invention proposes a new type of optical disc combining the advantages of compact discs and DVD discs and which can be read by both compact disc players and DVD players.
- the invention also provides a method of manufacturing this new type of optical disc.
- the optical disc according to the invention is composed of two elementary discs assembled by bonding one against the other, each elementary disc containing a transparent substrate with at least one information face provided with surface micro-alterations distributed along a track in spiral or concentric tracks and intended to be read using a laser beam.
- the micro-alterations can be in the form of micro-cuvettes, micro-projections and or continuous grooves.
- the information face of the first elementary disc is coated with a semi-reflective layer which is adjacent to the layer of assembly adhesive which is transparent.
- the information face of the second elementary disc is coated with a reflective metallic layer and is located opposite the layer of assembly adhesive.
- a protective layer then covers the reflective metallic layer of the second disc to serve as a label support for the disc.
- the semi-reflecting layer has a transmission coefficient greater than or equal to a first predetermined value for a wavelength of the laser greater than or equal to a first threshold.
- the semi-reflecting layer also has a reflection coefficient greater than or equal to a second predetermined value for a wavelength of the laser less than or equal to a second threshold.
- the first threshold is greater than the second threshold by at least 100 nm.
- the information face of the first elementary disc and the information face of the second elementary disc conform to two different standards, for example DVD and CD.
- the first predetermined value for the transmission coefficient is equal to 95%.
- the second predetermined value for the reflection coefficient is 25%.
- the wavelengths used are around 780 nm for the first threshold and around 650 nm for the second threshold, and the overall thickness of the disc is 1, 2mm.
- the secondary information side is coated with a semi-transparent layer which has characteristics similar to the semi-reflective layer of the first elementary disc as a function of the wavelength of the laser, and must not significantly deteriorate the normal reading of the semi-reflective layer and the reflective layer.
- FIG. 1 is a schematic perspective view of an optical disc according to the invention
- FIG. 2 is a detail view in section of the optical disc of FIG. 1 according to a first embodiment of the invention
- FIG. 3 is a characteristic curve of a semi-reflecting layer according to the invention.
- FIG. 4 is a block diagram for the manufacture of the disc according to the embodiment of FIG. 2,
- FIG. 5 is a detail view in section of the optical disc of FIG. 1 according to a second embodiment of the invention
- FIG. 6 are two characteristic curves of a semi-reflective layer and of a semi-transparent layer according to the invention.
- FIG. 7 is a block diagram for the manufacture of the disc according to the embodiment of FIG. 5.
- the optical disc of the invention is composed of two elementary discs D1 and D2 assembled one against the other using a layer of transparent glue 3.
- the two elementary discs D1 and D2 each have a thickness of approximately 0.6 mm.
- the diameter of the optical disc is 8 cm or 12 cm.
- the total thickness of the disc is about 1.2 mm.
- FIG. 2 schematically illustrates the structure of the disc according to a first embodiment of the invention.
- the first elementary disc D1 and the second elementary disc D2 are assembled one against the other by the layer of transparent adhesive 3.
- the elementary disc D1 consists of a layer of transparent substrate 4 of thickness approximately 0.6 mm .
- the upper face 4a of the transparent substrate 4 receives a read laser beam 5a or 5b.
- the lower face 4b or information face of the substrate 4 comprises micro-alterations 6 in the form of micro-cuvettes or micro-projections (known by the term "pits" in English) and is coated with a semi-reflective layer 6a.
- the micro-alterations 6 are distributed along a spiral track or according to concentric tracks.
- the second elementary disc D2 comprises a transparent substrate 7, the upper face 7a of which is glued against the information face 4b of the first elementary disc D1 using the transparent adhesive layer 3.
- the lower face 7b or information face of the transparent substrate 7 comprises a second series of micro-alterations 8 coated with a reflective metallic layer 9.
- the reflective metallic layer 9 is then covered by a protective layer 10, the outer face 10a of which can serve as a support for a label or other printed or pasted information concerning the content of the disc.
- the second elementary disc D2 has a thickness of approximately 0.6 mm. Given the small thickness of the adhesive layer 3, the overall thickness of the optical disc is approximately 1.2 mm.
- the laser beam 5a comes into contact with the first elementary disc D1 via the upper face 4a of the transparent substrate 4, then crosses the thickness of the transparent substrate 4 to focus on the information face 4b.
- Part of the laser beam 5a is reflected by the semi-reflective layer 6a to be read optically by photodetectors (not shown) and generate information by the reader (not shown). Another part of the laser beam 5a passes through the semi-reflecting layer 6a.
- the sum of the transmission coefficient and the reflection coefficient of the layer 6a is equal to 1.
- the laser beam 5a transmitted by the semi-reflecting layer 6a successively passes through the transparent adhesive layer 3 and the transparent substrate 7 before being reflected by the information face 7b of the second elementary disc 2 coated with the reflective metal tick 9.
- the light spot created by the laser beam 5a on the information face 7b of the second elementary disc is relatively large and defocused.
- the light beam reflected by the reflective layer 9 is strongly diffracted by the information face 7b before being filtered at again by the semi-reflective layer 6a to then be returned to the outside of the disc by the face 4a of the first elementary disc.
- the possible optical reading disturbances of the semi-reflecting layer 6a are thus minimized.
- a laser beam 5b is used which has a wavelength of 780 nm.
- the semi-reflective layer 6a has a high transmission coefficient to minimize the energy losses of the laser beam intended for reading the information face 7b of the second elementary disc D2.
- the laser beam 5b is focused on the information face 7b and is reflected by the reflective metal layer 9.
- the reflected beam again crosses the semi-reflective layer 6a to go towards the objective of the reader (not shown). It is important that the presence of the semi-reflecting layer 6a does not deteriorate the quality of optical reading of the information face 7b.
- the semi-reflecting layer 6a has a reflection coefficient greater than or equal to 25% for wavelengths less than or equal to 650 nm and a transmission coefficient greater than or equal to 95% for longer wavelengths or equal to 780 nm (see Figure 3).
- FIG. 4 schematically illustrates the method of manufacturing the optical disc according to the invention.
- the first elementary disc D1 and the second elementary disc D2 are produced on two parallel production lines.
- the elementary disc D1 is produced by pressing a transparent substrate using a mold according to standard DVD to shape a substrate with a thickness of about 0.6 mm comprising an information face according to the DVD standard. A semi-reflective layer is then deposited on the information face thus produced.
- the second elementary disc D2 is obtained by pressing a transparent substrate using a mold to shape a substrate with a thickness of about 0.6 mm and having an information face according to the CD standard. Layer information thus obtained is then coated with a reflective metal layer and a protective layer.
- the two elementary discs D1 and D2 thus obtained are assembled one against the other using a thin layer of transparent adhesive, the semi-reflective layer being adjacent to the adhesive layer while the reflective layer is located on the face opposite to the face receiving the glue.
- the disc thus obtained has a DVD information side at a depth of 0.6 mm and a CD information side at a depth of about 1.2 mm.
- FIG. 5 shows a second embodiment of the disc which differs from the first embodiment by the addition of a secondary information face 7a on the second elementary disc D2.
- the disc according to FIG. 5 is in all respects comparable to the disc previously described with reference to FIG. 2. It is sufficient here to use the same reference numbers to designate the same elements of the disc. Only the difference of this second embodiment compared to the first embodiment is described below.
- the secondary information face 7a is produced on the face of the transparent substrate 7 adjacent to the transparent adhesive layer 3 and opposite to the information face 7b of the second elementary disc D2.
- the secondary information face 7a also includes micro-alterations 11 similar to those of the information face 4b of the first elementary disc D1, in the sense that they are intended to be read according to the DVD standard as opposed to the face information 7b of the second elementary disc D2 which is intended to be read according to the CD standard.
- the secondary information face 7a is coated with a semi-transparent layer 12 which is practically transparent for the wavelength of 780 nm and which has a reflection coefficient greater than or equal to 45% for the shorter wavelengths or equal to 650 nm.
- the reflection coefficient of the information face 4b of the first elementary disc 4 for the lengths less than or equal to 650 nm must be greater than or equal to 25%.
- the transmission coefficient of the semi-reflecting layer 6a is less than or equal to 75%.
- the reflection coefficient of the semi-transparent layer 12 should be greater than or equal to 45%.
- the laser beam 5c focused on the secondary information face 7a for its reading has a portion having passed through the semi-transparent layer 12 of lower energy than compared to the first embodiment, which minimizes advantage the disturbances linked to the return of the laser beam reflected by the reflective metallic layer 9 of the second elementary disc D2.
- FIG. 6 illustrates two characteristic curves of the semi-reflecting layer 6a and of the semi-transparent layer 12.
- FIG. 7 presents the manufacturing steps.
- Two parallel chains are intended to make the elementary discs D1 and D2.
- the manufacture of the elementary disc D1 is identical to the process described for FIG. 4.
- a transparent substrate is pressed by a mold to produce two sides of information according to the DVD and CD standards respectively.
- a semi-transparent layer is then deposited on the DVD information face and a reflective metal layer on the CD information face.
- the reflective layer is then covered with a protective layer.
- the elementary discs D1 and D2 thus produced are glued together with a transparent adhesive, the information faces produced according to the DVD standard are glued face to face.
- the optical disc is thus produced which has two layers of DVD information and a layer of CD information, which increases the storage capacity of the disc.
- the semi-reflective layer 6a and the semi-transparent layer 12 it is possible to use materials such as polydiacetylene or cholesteric polymer (by deposition in a thin layer for example), the pitch of which can be adapted to change the reflection and transmission characteristics. depending on the wavelength of light.
- the invention it is possible to use the existing equipment for the production of CD discs and DVD discs to produce at low cost an optical disc compatible both for DVD players and for CD players without it being necessary to produce a CD-compatible DVD player.
- This new type of discs makes it possible to reconcile the practical concerns of consumers concerning the compatibility between CD discs and DVD discs, and in addition to create new disc markets for example: film music or a concert recorded in stereo on the CD information side and recorded in Dolby AC-3 Digital Surround on the DVD information side; An audio album on the CD information side and the associated video clips on the DVD information side (s); The complete songs of a singer on the DVD information side (s) and his 20 most famous songs on the CD information side; A film on the DVD information side (s) and the soundtrack or extract of music from the film on the CD information side, etc.
