- THIS INVENTION concerns a packaging assembly, particularly but not exclusively a packaging assembly usable for sending items such as for example pottery items through the post, and a method of making a packaging assembly.

- Such items are conventionally sent in packaging assemblies made from a folded blank.
- relatively heavyweight packaging material and often double wal l fibre board is used. Using this relatively heavyweight material increases the cost of the raw materials of the assembly, and also adds to the weight of the overall assembly thereby increasing posting costs.
- a packaging assembly comprising a structure formed from a material defining at least one planar or curved surface, with a layer of reinforcement on and extending across a part only of said surface preferentially in a region thereof to be in contact with or closely adjacent a packaged object, thus to protect the object.

- the material defines at least one planar or curved surface in the form of a flat blank and an adhesive layer is initi ally appl ied to a part only of a surface of the blank, a particulate reinforcement material being subsequently applied to the adhesive layer.
- the adhes ive layer is preferably applied by screen printing and the polystyrene beads are deposited on the adhesive layer by dipping or spraying.
- the adhesive layer may include an offsetting agent to delay drying thereof, and once the adhesive layer and reinforcement layer have been applied the sheets so formed are stacked and pressure applied thereto to ensure good adherence of the beads.
- the sheets are subsequently cut into blanks using a die cut former and folded to form a closable container.

- Fig. 1 shows a sheet 10 of corrugated board.
- Glue 12 is applied to the sheet 10 as shown in Fig. 2 by screen printing.
- the glue 12 is applied onto the screen 14 and urged there through by a squeegee 16 or other member onto the sheet 10.
- the glue passes only through unblocked parts of the screen 14.
- a crucifix pattern of glue 12 is provided on the sheet 10.
- the glue 12 may be a conventional emulsion type glue but includes an offsetting agent to delay drying thereof.
- polystyrene beads 18 are applied onto the sheet 10 and particularly the parts thereof bearing the glue 12. In this instance the beads 18 are shown ⁇ Fig. 4) being dropped onto the sheet 10.
- the glued sheet 10 could be dipped into a supply of beads or the beads could be applied by spraying. Excess beads 18 are removed by brushing, or tapping of the sheet 10 whilst inverted, or sucked or blown off the surface of sheet 10 by one or more pipes connected to a fan and directed at or over the sheet.
- the sheets 10 bearing the adhered beads 18 as shown in Fig. 5 are stacked as shown in Fig. 6, and a weight 20 is applied to the top of the stack to ensure good adherence of the beads 18.
- the sheets 10 are subsequently cut into blanks using a die cut former 22 as shown in Fig. 7.
- Fig. 8 shows the assembly in a partially folded condition. It can be seen that the beads 18 are provided on at least central parts of all of the interior faces which may contact a mug or other article which could be packaged therein. Beads 18 are not however provided on the flaps 24 and other parts of the finished packaging assembly.
- the invention can be used with a wide variety of different packaging assemblies. It may be necessary for beads to be provided on all of the interior surfaces, but rather those surfaces which are to contact a packaged item. In some cases the beads may be applied additionally or alternatively on exterior surfaces of the assembly in that or those regions thereof to be occupied by or closely adjacent an item to be packaged.
- the beads may be applied by a different method, and different adhesives could be used. If required the adhesive and/or beads could be applied subsequent to cutting of the blank.
- the blank may be made from a wide range of materials, including plastics.
