Definitions

  • the objective of the invention is a method according to the characteristics in claim 1 and a device according to the characteristics in claim 6 for controlling a forklift mast, especially a method and device for controlling the mast between certain angels to secure the meeting of the surfaces between the load and the unloading platform from these sur ⁇ faces simultaneously.
  • Indicator devices have been developed to indicate the straightness of the mast, i.e. when the mast is in the correct position, e.g. indicator constructions in which one part is attached to the forklift frame and the other to the mast. When the mast is in right position, the indicator construction parts match.
  • the device functions well in principle, but has the disadvantage that the final result is totally dependent on the attitude, skill and care of the worker. In practice these known devices are seldom used correctly, as the workers for some reason do not adjust the mast into correct position before gripping the roll with the forklift jaws, whereby the roll can get damaged already at this stage.
  • the US-patent publication 2 603 36 ⁇ presents an equipment for controlling the mast inclination, which is provided with limit switches in the bottom of the mast to observe certain inclination angles.
  • the US-patent publication 3 319 816 presents a solu ⁇ tion for the controlling of the mast inclination, in which the mast inclination is connected to a potentiometer, the resistance conversion of which is observed as a change from the balance station, and in which the electric circuit aims at correcting the change by controlling a change valve using the cylinder.
  • the potentiometer resistance can alternatively be compared to some preset resistance, corresponding to the inclination angle. Such a direct inclination measuring from the articulated shaft twist is likely to make it sensitive to i.a. temperature variations and other disturbances.
  • the Finnish utility model application 920200 presents also a mast centering device. This consists mainly of limit switch ⁇ es placed in the forklift frame, with a connection to the forklift hydraulic system, and of a metal plate back stop attached to the forklift on top of these. The limit switches and the back stop are at a bigger distance from the forklift articulated shaft than previously, by which the centering accuracy is improved, according to the application.
  • the significant benefit of the invention is that it offers a fairly simple solution to provide the driver with informa- tion about the mast inclination, and that the invention can be modified for different purposes.
  • Fig. 1 presents schematically the forklift and the fork- lift mast.
  • Fig. 2 presents the readings of the forklift mast dis- tance detector in two different mast positions.
  • Fig. 3 shows the mast circuit card, from which there are connections to the hydraulics for the monitoring and controlling of the mast turning motion.
  • Fig. 1 presents the forklift and its mast.
  • the forward/- backward motion of the forklift mast is steered by the hydraulic cylinders 6 controlling the inclination.
  • the forklift mast 2 can be moved forward/backward around the articulated shaft 7 provided in the lower end of the mast.
  • the hydraulic cylinder or cylinders 6 is/are in connection with the forklift hydraulic system 5, which is presented schematically as one box, and which comprises a hydraulic pump 8, a manual control valve, which is not shown, its operating arm 4 including its indicator lights and hydraulic oil container, which is not shown. Craftsmen are accustomed to add necessary auxiliary apparatus for the operation of the hydraulic system.
  • the solution according to the invention comprises in one embodiment an analogue distance measuring detector 1, in ⁇ stalled in the forklift frame so that its "eye" is directed towards the forklift mast.
  • the detector can e.g. be an ultra-sound detector, such as detectors produced by the Honeywell Company with the type marking 945L4Y-2D-ICO.
  • the detector is applied to measure the distance between the detector and the self-predetermined surface of the mast.
  • a connection 9 is provided from the detector to the signal processing device 3, in which the impulses given by the detector are compared electrically. If the transferred impulses or messages deviate from the calibrated position, in which the mast is to be at a calibrated distance from the detector, which calibrated position generally is vertical, the mast is inclined, i.e.
  • the mast is moved towards the calibrated position.
  • the forklift driver can use the detec ⁇ tor and its signal processing unit by starting the device from the cabin push-button.
  • the detector con- stantly measures the distance of the detector to the fork- lift mast and sends the hydraulic system an impulse, accord ⁇ ing to which the forklift hydraulic system steers the mast inclination cylinder into a position, where the self-prede ⁇ termined surface of the mast is at the above mentioned predetermined distance from the mast.
  • the distance detector ceases to operate automatically, whereafter the driver's stick con ⁇ trols can be used to steer the mast.
  • the forklift mast hydraulic cylinder 6 can be instructed to change the mast direction in relation to the articulated shaft. Depending on in which direction the mast is oblique, the hydraulic cylinder piston is moved forward or backward when using the control system, so that the desired distance is achieved.
  • the electric message of the detector is e.g. 1 V - 9 V, which thus corresponds to the predetermined distance between the detector and mast sur ⁇ face, e.g. 40 - 50 cm.
  • the control unit can be so programmed that 4 V e.g. corresponds to 45 cm, by which the mast gener- ally is in vertical position and no control is required.
  • control system When the control system is in use, and the detector gives an electric value which deviates from 4 V, the control system sends an impulse to the forklift hydraulic system to move the mast into a predetermined position. When this has been achieved, the control system is switched off.
  • the signal processing device When using the signal processing device, it processes the data from the detector, and if the data is outside the calibrated extreme values, information is given to the hydraulic system to change the position of the hydraulic cylinder.
  • two control systems can be used, to compare in one system the information given by the detector with the position of the mast being vertical in relation to the unloading site floor, and the other system, where the mast is vertical in relation to the load ⁇ ing site floor.
  • load carried by the forklift mast can always be placed in such a position that the product to be lifted is not dam ⁇ aged.
  • the invention is not to be considered as restricted only to roll handling, but also when handling pallets transporting e.g. bottle cases, it is important that the grip elements do not break the pallet when pushed at certain distances from each other into the openings beneath the pallet for the moving of the pallet.
