Definitions

  • This invention relates to delivery vehicle handling systems.
  • An object of the present invention is to provide a simple mechanical means, requiring little physical effort, for transferring barrels from and to the inside of a delivery vehicle and to and from a position outside said vehicle.
  • the said position outside the vehicle might be the floor of a beer cellar. It is estimated that approximately a fifth of public houses have cellars provided with a door at ground level and outside the building such that in the use of the invention barrels can be lowered into and removed from the cellar through the aperture usually closed by the said cellar door. In cases in which the cellar is inaccessibly positioned, the barrels can be transferred simply to a ground level position with little physical effort as required.
  • a handling system installed on a delivery vehicle should occupy as little as possible of what otherwise would be storage space, to maintain the delivery capacity of the vehicle. This provides a further object of the invention, which is to satisfy the need for a vehicle handling system whilst occupying a minimal amount of storage space on the delivery vehicle.
  • a handling system for installation onto a delivery vehicle comprising a supporting framework and lifting tackle, said lifting tackle being carried by a movable rail which is projectable outside a vehicle fitted with the system, thereby allowing the lifting tackle to carry loads over positions both within and outside the fitted vehicle.
  • the lifting tackle is preferably movable along the said movable rail, and the said movable rail is preferably carried by transverse guide means, whereby the said lifting tackle is movable transversely in a fitted vehicle.
  • the said movable rail is preferably a cantilever rail which is projectable from both sides of a fitted vehicle.
  • the said transverse guide means are preferably carried by longitudinal guide means, whereby the said lifting tackle is movable longitudinally in a fitted vehicle, and the said longitudinal guide means may comprise two lateral guide rails, and the said transverse guide means comprise a bridge rail which is supported in the said guide rails by wheeled hanger means.
  • the said movable rail is preferably carried by spaced guide units designed and arranged so that the rail can project cantilever fashion from either side of the vehicle whilst supported by said units, said rail when projecting from one side of the vehicle being supported by some of said units, and when projecting from the other side being supported by others.
  • the said transverse guide means may comprise lateral roller pairs and central roller pairs between which the said cantilever rail is held, thereby allowing a load to be supported at both sides of a fitted vehicle whilst maintaining the said cantilever rail at a constant attitude.
  • the handling system preferably comprises various electric drive means whereby the said lifting tackle is displacable, namely means whereby the lifting tackle is drivable along the said movable rail, and/or a central electric drive means, whereby the said cantilever rail is transversely drivable in both directions, and/or wherein the said transverse guide means comprise at both ends of the said bridge rail electric drive means whereby the said transverse guide means are longitudinally drivable in both direction.
  • the said electric drive means are preferably electric brake motors which act to lock the lifting tackle in place whilst the said motors are inoperative.
  • the lifting tackle may comprise an electric power hoist and a barrel lifting frame.
  • the invention further provides a delivery vehicle fitted with a handling system.
  • a barrel in the vehicle may be transferred to the floor of a beer cellar by moving the lifting tackle, which may comprise a hoist and a sling attatched thereto, to a position above the barrel, then, by attatching the sling to the barrel, and by lifting the barrel.
  • the hoist may be hand-operated or power-operated, in either case requiring considerably less effort than that required without the use of the hoist.
  • the hoist, sling and barrel can then be moved to a position outside the vehicle, below which lies the beer cellar floor onto which the barrel is to be placed. This also may be effected by hand or by machine.
  • the barrel is then lowered and released onto the said floor. To remove a barrel from a beer cellar to the delivery vehicle the reverse of the above actions are performed.

  • the lifting tackle is movable to positions lateral to and outside the lorry tailboard 3.
