Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a means for barring animals, in particular rats, from entering a network of tubes, for instance a section of a sewerage system, said means comprising a hatch or a body, which in a transition well is hinged at level with and covering the outlet from the network of tubes into the transition well.
  • Such means are -known in various shapes and are in particular used in sewerage systems, where it is desirable to prevent rats from spreading. It is true that the means are open in one direction, but experience has shown that if you bar rats from getting back to their families, the popu ⁇ lation in a certain network of tubes will decline very quickly. In periods with a heavy flow of liquid, the rats are conveyed by the liquid, and if they are barred from getting back to their nests and other whereabouts, the con ⁇ ditions of life will deteriorate so much that the population in most cases will become extinct in those places, where it was originally found.
  • the known constructions for instance the one disclosed in German published specification No.
  • the object of the invention is to increase the effi ⁇ ciency of the means for barring animals from entry mentioned by way of introduction both with respect to attaining a re ⁇ duction of the possibility for the animals to enter there ⁇ through in the barring direction, when the hatch is functioning correctly, and with respect to control and cleaning of the hatch, when this might turn out to be neces- sary to ensure its correct function through a longer period of time.
  • the means for barring animals from entry is charact ⁇ erized by the subject matter of the characterizing clause of claim 1.
  • the trap is preferably a funnel placed on an element, which is rotatable with respect to the other elements of the well around the axis of the well. This construction ensures that inlet and outlet from the well can be adjusted to cer ⁇ tain conditions by means of only two, universally construct- ed elements.
  • Fig. 1 is a vertical section through an embodiment of a transition well provided with a means according to the in- vention for barring animals from.entry.
  • Fig. 2, Fig. 3 and Figs. 4a and 4b show parts of a transition well made from plastics and provided with a means for barring animals from entry, said transition well being adapted to form part of sewerage systems consisting of plastic tubes.
  • the transition well shown in a sectional view in Fig. 1 comprises a discharge branch 1 passing through the wall of a well ring 2, which in the example shown comprises an outer cylindrical wall and an inner conical wall 4.
  • the double- walled construction is advantageous when the well ring is made from reinforced plastics, in which case there will be a hollow space between the two walls, while the well ring when made of concrete will be solid between the outer cylindrical surface 3 and the inner conical surface 4.
  • the discharge branch 1 is provided with a protrusion 5 projecting into the conical interior of the well ring, said protrusion being ob ⁇ liquely cut.
  • the discharge branch is outside the well ring provided with a sleeve 6, to which may be connected a point ⁇ ed end of the tubes in a tube section, which is to be barred from the entry of animals, preferably rats.
  • the well ring ends at the top with a flange 7 forming the seat of addi ⁇ tional well rings 8, through which access can be gained to the well from the ground surface.
  • a trap element 9 which by means of a sleeve 10 surrounds the lower part of the well ring 2 and which with a corresponding sleeve section 11 surrounds the lower part of the conical wall 4.
  • the sleeve section 11 extends into a bend 12 extending towards the side of the trap, and which is outside the latter extending into a pointed end 13, to which a sleeve on a tube section 14, which forms the outlet from the well, can be connected.
  • the trap element may as indi ⁇ cated in Fig. 1 be constructed with double walls, which ele- ment is suited for being produced from reinforced plastics, and in which a hollow space is provided between the outer wall and the bend, or from concrete, in which case the ele ⁇ ment is solid between the outer wall and the tube bend 12.
  • the embodiment is shown with a cylindrical outer shape, it should be added that also when it is made from plastics the outer cylindrical wall may be left out, the in ⁇ ner conical wall being then made with sufficient strength for resisting the pressure from the surrounding ground and for resisting other influences, for instance traffic passing the cover of the well in street level.
  • the actual means for barring animals from entry is a hinged flap or hatch 15 mounted in front of the outlet end 5, said flap or hatch resting against the outlet end 5 by means of its own weight.
  • the hinge of the hatch is placed on that side of the hatch, which faces the tube end, the centre of gravity of the hatch in its closed position being dis ⁇ placed somewhat in relation to the vertical plane through the hinge.16.
  • the hinge 16 is connected to the cover 17, which rests against the flange 7, and which is placed immediately above the outlet 5.
  • the cover is pro ⁇ vided with a handle 18 facilitating the removal of the cover during inspection of the well.
  • a protrusion 19 fits with a small clearance into a corresponding recess in the inner wall 4, which makes it possible to place the cover in only one position, namely the one in which the hatch 15 is placed exactly in front of the end of the outlet 5.
  • the cover is provided with a smaller opening allowing the necessary airing, and which in case of a clogging in the sewer allows water to penetrate into the upper part of the well without the cover being lifted.
  • the opening may also be placed next to the cover or be a groove in the seat, in which the cover is placed.
  • the embodiment shown in Fig. 1 comprises a number of measures which in combination makes the means for barring animals from entry effective.
  • the conical shape of the inner wall makes the diameter of the well at level with the outlet so big that the animal will have no possibility of getting foothold in front of the hatch 15.
  • the position of the cover 17 immediately above the protruding tube end makes it impos- sible for the animal to jump up on the upper surface of the tube end 5 and manipulate the hatch from there.
  • the distance from the bottom of the well, in which the water surface is present, to the tube end 5 is so big that the animal is barred from reaching the hatch 5 even when stand- ing on its hind paws.
  • the lower edge approx. 25 cm above the bottom of the well, but preferably more, for instance approx. 35 cm, if there is no water surface therein, and at least 7 cm above a water sur- face, if any, combined with the presence of a trap in the well.
  • the height should, when possible, be bigger than the smallest dimension and for instance be 10-15 cm.
  • the diameter of the well should be at least 16 cm, but should preferably be more, for instance 25 cm.
  • Fig. 2, Fig. 3 and Figs. 4a and 4b show parts of a simplified embodiment of a transition well with means for barring animals from entry.
  • Fig. 2 is a lateral view of the well ring, in which the outlet from the tube section to be barred from entry is mounted.
  • the well ring is provided with a sleeve or collar along the upper edge, forming the seat of a cover shown in Figs. 4a and 4b, and which also forms the seat for additional well rings giving access for inspection of the well.
  • Fig. 3 is a lateral view of a bottom element for the well.
  • the bottom element has the shape of a pipe and provides the necessary distance between the bottom of the well and the outlet.
  • the bottom has smooth walls and there ⁇ fore provides a bad foothold for the animal, should it try to push istelf towards the outlet in order to manipulate with the hatch.
  • the hatch closing the outlet is mounted on the cover, which is in Fig. 4b shown from the side and as mounted in the well ring according to Fig. 2.
  • Fig. 4a the cover is shown from the right side of Fig. 4b, and it can be seen that the protruding outlet itself is used as a guide for the cover, which is provided with a downward collar which is circumferential apart from a recess having the same width as that of the diameter.
  • the cover can consequently only be mounted in such a way that the hatch closes the out ⁇ let in the correct way.
