Definitions

  • the invention relates to yarn and a method for making lace including Leavers lace and warp knitted fabrics generally.
  • Textile fabrics such as lace tend to come undone through the pulling of a yarn, and can have their appearance damaged and sometimes their structure destroyed in this way. This is particularly true of warp-knitted fabric such as Raschel lace wh ich un-knits on pull ing a single yarn from one end.
  • Patent Specification GB 944011 (Polymark) describes fabrics suitable for tabs or labels containing a thermoplastic component which may be fused for attachment to other textile fabrics for identification purposes. Woven fabric of coarse grade is illustrated having each warp yarn doubled and consisting of a non-thermoplastic material such as cotton and a thermoplastic component. GB 1042592 (Polymark) is similar. These yarns are not suitable for knitting to make lace.
  • GB 1240114 discloses a filament having a core and a sheath of lower softening point for fusing into a sliding clasp fastener.
  • GB 1393712 (Toray) describes a high bulk yarn comprising short fibres having different melting points.
  • GB 1558992 (Nederlandse) relates to a staple fibre yarn comprising at least 30% PET for fusing instead of sizing.

  • the invention provides a yarn suitable for knitting into a lace which comprises a number of filaments of continuous synthetic fibre at least one of which is of lower melting temperature than the remainder, the first mentioned filaments totalling from 1 to 100 decitex, the lower melting filament from 1 to 50 decitex, and the ratio first mentioned filaments : lower melting filaments being from 20:1 to 1:1.
  • the preferred values for each of the above figures are: first mentioned filaments from 30 to 50 decitex, lower melting filaments from 8 to 20 decitex, and/or the said ratio from 15:1 to 6:1.
  • Heating of lace made from this yarn causes the lower melting filament to adhere to the remainder of the lace and so prevent the lace coming undone.
  • Heat treatment to scour or stabilize the lace melts the lower-melting filament, and its subsequent solidification causes adherence at cross-over points between yarns in the lace. This can be done in a stenter, and the introduction of stiffening agent reduced.
  • the filaments each preferably consist of nylon, but polyester or any other fibre which can be made in the appropriate ranges of linear density may alternatively be used.
  • Nylon has a melting temperature of 360°C.
  • the lower-melting filament can be of nylon or like polyamide and have a melting range of perhaps 110 C to 120°C or 130o to 140°C. Such lower-melting nylons are known as melt bonding fibres.
  • Mixing of the filaments can be by twisting, intermingling, blowing or air-tangling.
  • Yarn according to the invention can be knitted either into the background inlay, or net of a lace, or into the pattern or pillars, or both.
  • the invention includes a method of making lace which comprises warp knitting a yarn according to the invention, and heating the material produced to cause the lower melting filament to adhere to the remainder and so prevent the lace coming undone.

  • the yarn in Figure 1 comprises ten filaments (10) each of 4 decitex nylon twisted together with one 17 decitex filament (12) of low-melting nylon. Pillars of thread as shown in Figure 2, of which there are normally 24 per inch (about 2.54 centimetres), hold all the other threads in the lace together. The darker parts (12) indicate the low-melting nylon.
  • the arrow in Figures 2 and 3 indicates a cross-over point at which the low-melting nylon thread (12) will cause adherence and stick together the loops.

  • a 20-filament nylon yarn of 30 decitex is produced from a spinneret.
  • a single filament of nylon having a melting range of 110° to 120°C is similarly spun, separated from the other filaments, and mixed with the first-mentioned yarn.
  • the resulting mixed yarn is warp-knitted on a Raschel machine into a lace fabric.
  • the lace is heat-set in a stenter at 190°C, and proves resistant to coming undone.
