Description

j joined at the end, by
ALEXANDER w; HARRIS, or NRW YORK," n'. Y.
e j lMPRovEM ENI-.1Npsusesnpssf i stammen, farming pm of Lea-ers raamt No. 7eme, date 'June 1ct-ieee; Reissue Nojel '5,' (uien l August 24, 1869.
i To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that l, ALEXANDER WIMnIsH HARRIS, of New Yo k city, county and State of ANew York, Unite States of America, have invented a new and Improved Adjustable Suspender and Brace', and l dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact. description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make use of the same.
l The drawings represent my invention as folows: Figure I, A is a straight piece of webbing, which, being passed through the loops B B and the appliance of a'slide, buckle, o rother device, asnslloyynnat C, 'forms an adjustable suspender, as shown in Figi l, which can be crossed in lputting it on, at the pleasure of the wearer. Fig. 2. shows the suspender crossed and held in proper adjustment the 'slide C C, the object of which isto secure an adjustable crossing in theproper place,
.at the pleasure of the wearer, and which can be taken off or worn at convenience. Fig 3 represents the accommodation-slide C C, which can be fornred of metal, leather, cloth,or anyl suitable material. yIt is provided with v four slots, l) l) Dl), for the purpose of passing the webbing through, aiter which tliewebbing is held in place by the four raised lips, E E E E.
Fig. 4 represents a section `of Fig. 3 from F to G. Fig. 5.is another form of the accom= modation double slide, composed of two loops,
, of metal'or` any proper substance, as shown by Fig. 6, which' are connectedat Fby a pin, pivot, or other device, which allows them to -move freely from the common center, F, and
thus 'conform to any anglev the rising o f the suspender or brace may require. 'f l From theforegoing it will be seen that my improv/ed suspender or brace presents the following advantages, viz: first, the making of Suspenders or braces of a single piece of webL b ing, leather, cloth, or other material, substan-v taally as shown in Fig. 1, which can be crossed at the discretion of the wearer, and which, not .being confined at any point', but passing freely through the button-strap loops B'B at each side, will conform, themselves to any shape or angle that convenience may require; second, that my suspender or brace, bypassing freely `through a slide,
through the loops R B, as above described, i self-adjusting, as the length can be regulated on both sides at one and the same time by drawing one end only of the suspender orbrace` shown at C (l in Fig. 1; and, third,'that by,
`reason of thc accommodat-ion-slide, as shown `at Figs. 3 and 5, or any other equivalent device, the two parts where they cross cach other at theback can slide freely for self-adj ustment, while at the same time they arc held together.
l have described and shown a suspender" vconsisting of a single strap or piece of webhing crossing' on the back through an adjust-- able slide. It is manifest, howeverthat the slide will perform thesame function if 'applied to a suspender consisting of two separate straps crossing on the back, or of two straps crossing on the back with the ends fastened together or to a common tag, as inthe Cleveland combined shoulder-brace or suspender, or, in fact, when-applied to any suspender crossing in a similar manner on the back of the wearer. I first applied an adjustable slide to the Cleveland ycombined shoulder-brace `and suspender While l was interested in 'the 'manufacture thereof under said Cleveland patent, and e011-, sidered -it at the time a most valuable improve ment. Hence, believing myself to be the first ever to applyan adjustable slide to a suspender of any kind at the crossing on the back, I consider that my invention consists,
in combining with any 'form of suspender lwhich crosses on the back anadjustable slide,
through which the strap cr straps shall cross, j
andb'y means of which the point of crossing lmay be 'readily changed or adjusted.
,What I claim as my invention, and desire l f to secure by Letters of manufacture, is:
1. A suspender or brace substantially such Patent, as a 4new article as described, consisting lof a single piece of or other equivalent webbing, leather, cloth,
and sliding freely-'n material passed through two button-strap loops, and the two ends connected by a buckle or equivalent means, by which the lengt-h can be adjnstedat pleasure, `as and for the purpose described.
2. As a new article of manuiacture, asuspender or brace consisting of a singlpeipiece of buckle, or other device, as
,webbing 0i* 'other equivale-nt mbi'ial', c011- and so y y y 'maize the, point of eressing 'ad'justablm stru'ctedsubstantially as described,` incolb-T substantially as described.
