Specification forming part of Design No. 8,283, dated April 20, 1875; application filed March 13, 1875. [Term of Patent 7 years] To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES Wrrrnclt, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and original Design for Handles for Spoons and Forks, of which the following is a specification The nature of my design is fully shown in the accompanying photographic illustration that forms a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1. is a plan \'l()\\' of the upper surface of the handle for spoons, forks, &e., and Fig. 2 a like View of the under surface.

In the Figs. 1 and 2, A represents the stem of the handle, either ot a spoon or fork, and l; the enlarged end thereof. The stem is gradually but slightl increased in width at both ends as it approaches the bowl or link. The enlarged end, forms at the bowl points or spurs, which eonneet by intermediate rounded sections with the body of the bowl. The end of the stem at the enlarged end is also formed with projecting points or spurs, delining by circular beads clearly the beginning of the handle end. The enlarged end runs from the stem with perfectly straight sides and gradually increasing width to the rear extremity, having a eonvexoconcave cross-section and upward bent outer end, with rounded-elf corners forming the connection of the sides with the straightlateral end or base of the enlarged handle end. A central button or knob of the baseline projects suiticiently to impart a more finished shape to the otherwise plain geometrical configuration of the handle part. The ornamentation of the upper surface at the enlarged end consists mainly of a larger shield or buckle near the wider end, and a similar buckle near the narrower end, the buckles extending laterally across the surface and being connected by suitable scrolled ornaments to the sides of the enlarged handle end. A raised molding runs along the contour of the enlarged end, while a raised band with gradually decrcasin g tapering sides extendsin longitudinal direction from the projecting end button to the larger and smaller buckles, the band being detined by raised side i'noldings and the band and the space between them and the contour molding being tilled up by small flower and scroll work, (inille-fezrilles,) thatimparts an exceedingly rich appearance to the upper surface. The smaller bucklejoins, by scroll ornaments and tlowers ot' gradually-(iiminishing size, with the parallel raised lines of the stem that end in a rounded oft part and a small rosette intermediatcly between the points or spurs of the bowl end of the stem. The under surface of the handle is made very plain, it showing only a double contour molding running from the end button and the raised hand, that has been continued from the upper surface along the edge of the enlarged part and stem to the bowl. The raised band is terminated on the under side near the projecting end button by being suitably rounded oli', tilled with small flowers and provided with a small central head at the foremost end. The ornamentation at the bowl end of the stem, and at the base of the bowl is made of symmetrical scroll-work and an inclosing band or line conforming to the shape of the stem and bowl.
