UIIARLES OSBORNE, 0]! NORTH ATTLEHOROUGII, MASS, ASSIGXOR TO THE \VIIITING MAXUFAU"URIXU COMPANY, OF NIHV YORK CITY.
DESIGN FOR HANDLES FOR SPOONS AND FORKS.
Specification forming part of Design No. 7,909, dated December 1, 1874; application filed June 20, 1 74. [Term of Patent 1 1 years] CASE A.
To (LU whom it may concern le it known that I, UnAnLEs OSBORNE, of North Attleborongh, Bristol county, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and original Design for the Handles ot' Spoons and Forks, of which the following is a speeilication:
The accompanying drawings form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a view of the upper side or front of the handle, and Fig. J a view of the under or reverse side.
Similar letters indicate correspmuling parts.
The handle is composed, as usual, of two principal sectionstingei"piece A and shank 1). The lower end of the fingei piece is ta pered and the upper end elliptical, and the whole bordered with a double head, a I), the outermost of which, marked a, is a jointed reed, and the innermost of which, marked 1), is plain. The field within bears slightly- :urved stems c with pointed leaves (I and tufts, composed of slender radiating filaments c. On one of the stems is a bird rousant,f. Toward thejnnetion with the shank is a series of light interwoven diagonal bands, g. Below this, marking the junction with the shank, is a stout encircling band, 11, corded, as shown. The reeded decoration of the edges is continned along the shank. The center of the jointed.
shank bears a heavy reed, m, correspomlingly Near the lower end of the shank are corded crossed bands The ends of the central reed m are shown as cut obliquely.
The pattern or design may be varied in size, and in the precise arrangement of the stems and other details, so long as they form essentially the same design, and produce the same ornamental and distinctive etl'ect. loth the times may be alike, or but slightly varied, but I propose in most instances to thus deco rate only the face, and make the reverse side plain.
1 claim as myinvention in designs for spoon and fork handles- 1. Thejointed bead or reed u in the margin and the corresponding jointed reed in along the center line, with the bands h 1'], as shown and described.
2. The design for a spoon or fork handle, having the jointed reeds u in, bands l: ij, lighter interwoven bands g, and with a. bird, stems, and tut'ts, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of June, 1874, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES OSBORNE.
