Description

UNITED STATES PATENT CEEICE.
JOHN NILssON, OE BROOKLYN, NEw YORK.
DESIGN Fon cAsKET.
Specification forming part of Design No. 6,117, dated September 3, 1872.
Specification describing a Design for Caskets, invented by JOHN NILssoN, of Brooklyn,
in the county of Kings and State of New York.
The nature of my design is fully represented in the accompanying drawing, to which reference is made, and in which- Figure 1 is a top view, Fig. 2 a side view, and Fig. 3 an end view, of a casket constructed according to my design. Fig. 4 shows a dot- -ted outline of an old form, which I do not claim,l but merely show in order to better explain, by contrast, the distinctive feature of my design.
-Ais the casket, of which B is the cover. The longitudinal edges of the cover B may be parallel to each other, as seen in Fig. l, or they may converge toward one end, as usual; but the ends of the cover, Whether as seen in plan or end view, are formed of, preferably, three circle arcs on each side of the center line of the casket in the following manner: From a center7 a, in the center line of the casket, with a b for radius, is described the arc b c. On the line a c, connecting the center a with the extreme end 0 of the arc b c, is taken the center a for the arc c d, described by the radius a c. The line a d, connecting the center a with the extreme end d of the are c d, is then extended beyond d, and on its extended portion a point, e, is taken as center for completing the curve from d to f. Thus is formed a continuous partly concave, partly convex, curve, the portion marked dc b c d being the convex, and f d d f the concave portions. If, with the point i for center and t' d for radius, the dotted circle-arc d d were drawn, the center e of the arc cl j would still lie on the extended radius i d of the previous arc, and the half of the end of the cover B be an even curve of only two arcs; but I prefer three. In the drawing, the arcs b c, c 1,11 j' in the endview, in Fig. 3, are drawn by exactly the sameradiuses as the similarly-marked arcs in the plan, Fig. l; but I do not limit myself to this, as the proportion of radiuses may be slightly varied without destroying the continuity of the curve or the symmetry between its appearance in plan and end views. The shape of the ends of the casket A conforms with that of the ends of the cover B. C and D are raised portions of the cover B, put on for ornament, and their ends` are all shaped in conformity with the end curves of the cover B, as seen in the drawing; but the inner end curves g and h of the reliefs G and A design for caskets in which the cover, I
whether as seen in plan or in an end elevation of the casket, is formed into the curve constructed as shown and described, and the ends of the casket A and of the reliefs C D are curved symmetrically therewith.
J OHN NILSSON.
