WILLIAM GORMAN, OF NEW BRITAIN,

CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO RUS- SELL & ERWIN MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
Design No. 4,474, dated November 15, 1870.
DESIGN FOR A CAR-LOCK.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the name.
To all whom it may concern:
- class known as rim-locks, which are intended to be set upon the surface of the door-stile instead of being let into a mortise cut therein.
In the drawinga. is a molding, which defines the edge of the lockcase, as well as of the keeper B, and separates the ornamental design upon the face of the lock, and of the keeper from that upon the sides.
This molding, in the case of both lock and keeper, intersects with a rounded edge plate, I), appropriate to each.
The design of the face of the look A commences with a central rosette, c, inclosed in a four-sided figure, whose exterior lines curve inward, and whose inner lines are filled out, so as to be nearly concentric with the outlines of the rosette, and also to show Gothic points at the angles where the curved lines of the figure meet.
From each of the angles of the figure radiates a trefoil, as shown, while alternate with them, and springing from the middle point of each of the curved sides of the figure, radiates a leaf and scroll figure, as represented.
The edge of the molding a is ornamented with cinque foils alternate with points.
The design upon the face portion of the keeper B is that of ciuque foils, alternate with points.
The sides of both look and keeper are ornamented with lotus leaves, arranged alternately with trefoils, separated flOlll each other by Gothic arches resting on hands and scrolls.
All the ornamental work described and represented is in relief upon a frosted or a plain ground.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The ornamental design fora car-lock and keeper, herein described, and shown in the drawing.
WILLIAM GORMAN.
