Description

PATENTED MAR 1 1370 linimi gisten @wat (itiliiiw.
WILLIAM GORMAN, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGN OR T0 RUS- SELL & ERWIN MANUFACTURING COMPANY, 0F SAME PLACE.
Design No. 3,873, dated March 1, 1870.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM GonMAN, of New Britain, in the county of Hartford, and State of Gonnecticut, have originated and designed a new Design for Outside-Door Latches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the drawings accompanying and making part of this specification.
The door-latch shown in the drawings belongs to the class of' latches which is suitable for outside doors, for stores, oices, 85e. The handle is usually set obliquely to the plane of' the plate, to protect the hand when the latch is attached to a door made in two parts, and with a narrow stile. This handle, it is to be understood, can be reversed before the latch is iinally secured to the door, so as to suit doors swinging either to the right or to the left.
The plate A is rounded at the ends, as seen at a., and its edge is surrounded by a raised band, b, and an embossed molding, c. The general effect of asunken' panel is thus obtained. The ground of the panel is matted, relieved by raised rosettes in the circular spaces formed by the rounding of the ends, and by vine and leaf-work in relief upon each side of the thumb-piece.
A gothic band, d, in relief, intersects with the edge band b, as shown, and the space beneath is occupied with the bust of a female figure, snrmounting the vine and leaf-work, which fills the two lower corners.
The handle rests upon two clawed feet. The edge of the gripe is surrounded by a raised band, which is connected at the turn by fillets, e e, and the central portion is filled with scroll-work in relief.
The thumb -piece is likewise characterized by a raised edge band, with the interior space occupied by a raised leaf upon a matted ground.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'lhe ornamental design for a door-latch, substantially as herein shown and described.
NVILLIAM GORMAN.
