Description

waited States @met dtjijiiw.
Letters Patent No. .99,013, vdated January 18, 1870.
IMPRov'ED Locri The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it 'may concern.
Beit known that I, H. S. SHEPA-RDSON, of Shelburne Falls, Franklin county, State of Massachusetts, have invented certaiunew and useful Improvements in Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full and clear description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the lett-ers of reference marked thereon.
In the drawings- Figure I is a side sectional view tln'ough a door, and my lock attached.
Figures II and III are cross sectional views through parts of the same, showing different positions of the interior works.
Figure IV is a partial sectional view in detail.
Figure V is a detail view accompanying Fig. I.
- In construction, I form my lock of a case, F, coutaiuing the tumbler-holder H, which is operated by means of the flat key X.
An auxiliary cam, D, operates the main lock, and a connecting-piece, Y, connects the tumbler-holder in the case F on one side of' the door, and the cam D, operating the main lock on the other side ofthe door. This piece Y is adjusted in length to t the thickness of door.l
The construction of the lock contained in the case F is as follows: The tumbler-holder is turned vby a fiat key, which passes into the lock through a number of sliding tumblers, a a, the slots m of which are made through the middle; and although these slots m are 'of different lengths, the lower ends are all upon lthe same line when the key is in place', the lock being in the position shown in Fig. I. y
The upper edge of the key is raised or depressed to suit the width ot' slot an, the sliding tumblers coming opposite to the relative parts when in place, and, when this is the case, the ends of the sliders are i'lnsh with the surface of the tumbler-holder on both sides, and the latter is free to be turned'by the key.
When the key is out, however, the tumblers spring np, operated by coil-springs, hereafter described, and their outer ends pass through slots K K in the case F, immediately 'over the tumbler, so that 4the tumbler'- holder cannot be turned until the tumblers be withdrawn.
Ihe tumblers 'are here provided with projections f, l
'.Ihese arms set into the upper parts of 'sockets-ll tl' in the tumbler-holder, andinto these vsockets are placed coil-springs,which tend always to throw up the tnmblers. NVhen the key is'in place, these coilsprings are compressedvwith the descent of the tumbler, between the lower edge of the arm and the bottomof the socket. j
',Ihe case F surrounding the tumbler-holder is provided with serew-threads,`at p, and an outer case, G, screws over it.- v x Into this case or sleeve G, the screws E E, connecting the two parts of the lock on opposite sides of the door, are screwed, they passing through a washer, C, which also forms the bearing for the cam D.
Now, having described my invention,
That I claim las new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the case G, the tumblers a a, Spc., constructed with the slots m and springs d, arranged, as described, within the tumbler-holder H, and operating, in connection with the case F, as set forth.
H. S. SHEPARDSON.
