Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN DECKER, OF SPARTA, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND CHAS. W. WARDWELL, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SLIDE-BOLTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,249, dated August 14, 1866.
To all whom it may concern.-
Beitknown that I, J oHN DECKER, of Sparta, in the county of Sussex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Slide- Bolt 5 and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section of my invention taken in the line .x Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a horizontal section ofthe saine taken in the line y y, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in applying a series of tumbler-s to a slide-bolt in such a manner that an ordinary bolt may be rendered as securc a fastening as an ordinary tumbler-lock, and without materially augmenting Vthe cost of the manufacture of the slide-bolt.
A represents the case in which the bolt B slides. This case may be otl cast or wrought meta-l. Thei'ormer will probably be most generally used. The bolt B is considerably shorter than the case, and it is provided with a thumbpiece, u, which projects through an oblong slot, b, in the case for the purpose of allowing the bolt to be readily inoved-shovcd into and out'i'rom the keeper C. (See Fig. l.)
Within the case A there are placed a series of tumblers, D, which are composed of straight bars, each of which has a deep notch, c, made in it, and these notches, when brought in line with each other by adj usting the tumblers, receive a projection, d, at the inner side of the bolt, and admit of the bolt being moved in the case, the tumblers moving with it. When, however, the notches o of all the tumbler-s are not in line the bolt cannot be moved, as a shoulder, e, at its outer surface will be in contact with the rear of the slot b, and the tumblers are moved so as to throw the notches o out of line when the outer end of the bolt is shoved into the keeper C; and hence, to draw back the bolt the tumblers D require to be adjusted so as to bring the notches c in line with each other and admit of the bolt being pressed inward, so that the shoulder e will clear the rear end ot' the slot b. To eect this readily a key, E, (shown in red outline in Fig. 2,) may be used, or a person maj7 set the tuniblers in the proper position by'. the aid of notches f, made in the rear parts of the tuinblers, the relative position ot' the several tumblers being obtained by counting the notches when the projection d ot' the bolt is in the notches c. Changes may be effected by this` arrange-ment by shifting the tumblers D, changing their position relatively with each other, so that differentones will be side byside, and also by having notches o made in both edges, so that they may be reversed, the notches in one edge not corresponding with those in the other edge.
The arrangement is extremely simple and efcient, and may be manufactured at a small cost, not materially exceeding that of the ordinary slide-bolt. y
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The bolt B, fitted in a case, A, and provided with a projection, d, at its rear side, and with a shoulder or stop, e, at its outer side, in combination with the tumblers D, notched as shown, to receive the projection d, and the oblong slot b in the case A, all arranged to operate substantially in the manner as and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN DECKER.
