To all whom Ii-t may con-cern Be it known that I, J AMES BRADY, of Brantford, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, hnve invented n new Improvement in Door-Keys; and I hereby declare the following, when taken in c0nnection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of-ret`erence marked thereon, to be a. fnil, clear, and exact description of the same, und which said draiwings constitute part oi' this specification, and represent in- Figure l, n side View of the key closed.
Figure 2, zt side view of the key extended; und in Figure 3, n longitudinal central section ot' the key extended.
This invention relates to un improvement in tint or thin shcet-metal keys, the object being to extend the key for convenience ot' turning and :it the same time toeprotect the bit and prevent its being Worn, as it is well known that but n. slight weer of the key materially effects the working of the lock.
My invention consists in a. key formed from zt single piece of sheet metal and combined with a. rectangular tube, so as to slide into or be drawn from the saidtube, and held in position when extended by a. spring arranged within the key.
A is the bit of n. common sheet-metal key.
B, n thin metal tube formed to extend partially or entirely around the bit, and so that the bit may be pressed into the tube, as in tig. 1, or drawn therefrom, as in tig. 2.
In the bit or key proper, A, I arrange a spring or latch, a, and through the tube a. slot, d, so that when the key is drawn out, ns'in figs. 2 and 3, the end or latch of the spring will spring up into the suid notch and hold the key in that position, but so that by pressingr the latch down into the tube the key muy be pressed'buck into the tube.
The tube of the key may be cheaply formed in like manner es nre wick-tubes ot' common lamps, the outer end being provided with a sheet-metal bow, C, nsseen in the drawings. ThusI form not only a protection for the key or bit, but, :tt the seme time, tm extension which makes the key'more convenient for use.
The key A, formed from n single piece of sheet metal, combined with n rectangular tube, B, and a." springlatch, a, within the key, t-he whole constructed and er ranged in the manner specified.
