EDWIN B. EVERITT, OF \VEST MERIDEN, OONNEOTIOUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN ADJUSTABLE KEV-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,28 1. dated June 8, 1875; application filed May 6, 1875. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN B. EVERITT, of West Meriden, county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented an improved Adjustable Door-Key Fastener, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part thereof.
My invention consists in a grooved button carrying a sliding eye, and provided with a long cylindrical shank, which is arranged to slide in a recess formed in the door at one side of and in a line with the key-hole of the door-lock, and a flanged collar fitted in the mouth of the said recess, whereby the button, carrying the sliding eye, may be adjusted to suit the length of the key used in the lock, and whereby, when thus adjusted, and the sliding eye is passed through the key-bow, the key cannot be turned in the lock.
Figure l is a front elevation of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same.
B is the button, formed with the circumferential groove to, as shown, and carrying the sliding eye E, which is adjusted in the groove a, as shown. S is the long cylindrical shank of the button, arranged to slide in the recess R, formed in the door D, at one side of and in a line with the key-hole of the door-lock, as G is the collar, fitted in the mouth of the recess, as shown, and provided with the wide flange j, which is secured to the surface of the door, as shown. The inner end of the -shank of the button is enlarged somewhat, as shown at e, to prevent it from passing entirely from the recess and collar, and being detached from the door. Now, it is evident that by means of its shank S, working in the recess B, and the collar 0, the grooved button B, carrying the sliding eye E, may be adjusted to suit the length of any key used in the lock, and that, being thus adjusted, the sliding eye E may be passed through the keybow B, as shown in Fig. 1, and thus operate to prevent the turning of the key in the lock, and that when the sliding eye is not thus employed it may, with the button, for convenience, be pressed back against the surface of the door, as shown in Fig. 2.
I do not claim, broadly, the slidingeye E and grooved but-ton B, as a door-key fastener, intending to limit myself to the combination, with the sliding-eye E, of the grooved button B, having the long cylindrical shank S, working in the recess R, formed in the door at the side of and in a line with the key-hole'of the door-lock, and the flanged collar 0, whereby the button and its eye are extensible and adjustable to suit the length of any key used and desired to be fastened.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the button B, having the circumferential groove a, and carrying the sliding eye E, and provided with the long shank S, working in the recess R, and the flanged collar 0, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
EDWIN BROWN SON EVERITT.
