Description
JUDD.
Bolts.
VPatented June16,1874.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEErcE EDVVRD M. JUDD, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOLTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,039, dated June 1G, 1874; application filed January 17, 1874.
CASE B.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD M. JUDD, of the city and county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Flush-Bolts nfor Doors; and the following is a specification thereof.
I make use of a screw applied to the knob of a flush-bolt in connection with a clampingplate that covers the slot'in the bolt-plate, so that the bolt is free to be moved endwise in the ordinary manner when the screw is re leased; but, by turning' the screw, the cla-inpin g-plate is pressed against the bolt-plate, and the bolt secured from end movement when either projected or retracted. The bolt and its stock are tted to slide at the rear of the bolt-plate, as usual, and in said plate is a slot, through which passes a screw that enters the stock ofthe bolt. The screw is provided with a knob at its outer end, acting against a clampin g-plate, and by turning said knob and screw in one direction the bolt-stock is firmly clamped to the plate, and when turned in the other direction the bolt is released, and can be moved by the knob either to project or retract the same, and it can then be clamped as aforesaid. In the drawing, Figure l is an elevation, partially in section, of the bolt and plate5vand Fig. 2 is an elevation of the rear of the bolt and its plate. The bolt-plate a for the door is of the usual character, and behind it are the bolt b and the stock c, which latter is tted to slide against the rear of the plate a in guides d. e is the knob for actuating the bolt, and the screw e is made with, or connected to,'thc same, and
said screw presses into the stock c. The plate c' serves to cover the slot in the plate a, and against the surface thereof the knob c rests, so that by turning the knob and screw the plate a will be clamped between the platet' and the plate of the bolt-stock c.
It is preferable that the stock c should be made sufficiently thick at the screw e to prevent the screw thread therein being easily worn out.
I have shown the stock as made with a boss or projection, h, for the screw e', and the same is within the slot in the plate a, and the end of this boss sits into a recess in the plate t', that covers the slot in the plate a.
It will now be apparent that the bolt b, plate i, and screw e move together', and that, by simply turning the knob and screw in one direction, the parts are clamped so that the bolt is firmly held in place, and, by turning the knob in the other direction, the boltis released, and can be moved by the knob to the desired position, and afterward securely clamped, so that there will be no danger of the bolt moving by any jarring of the door.
I claimv as my invention- The knob e and screw e/in combination with the clamping-plate fi, bolt b, stock c, and slotted plate a, substantially as set forth.
Signed this 12th day of January, A. I). 1874.
E. M. JUDD.
