ADJUSTABLE STRIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 6, 1917.
Application filed December 4, 1916. Ser al No. 134,800.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL J. PRINZLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at lndianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Strike, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in strikes for door locks.
At the present time, it is not uncommon to find instances where either by reason of carelessness in workmanship, or by reason of shrinkage of doors, the strike does not properly cooperate with the lock bolt or latch. and it has not been uncommon for workmen to attempt to remedy the difficulty by the common expedient of placing shims back of the strike plate or casting. Such a provision is generally unsatisfactory and unsightly, and the object of my present invention is to produce a strike plate which is especially adapted for adjustment, of the character mentioned, said strike plate being formed in two parts, a base and a face, which may be separated to a desired extent by readily formed shims which are practirally hidden when in place.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention. Figure 1 is a perspective view of a two-part strike plate, embodying my invention; Fig. 2 a view similar to Fig. 1, with several shims in place; Fig. 3 a pen spective view of several shims; and Fig. 41 a vertical section.
in the drawings, 10 indicates the base piece of my improved strike plate, said base being conveniently a casting, and provided with oppositely extending cars 11, 11 which are perforated to receive the fastening screws. The outer or striking plate is formed by a piece 12 which substantially conforms in outline to the main body of the part 10, and is preferably provided on its back face with a pair of threaded bosses 13 which fit within sockets 14 formed in main body 10. Screws 15 are passed through the bottoms of pockets 1% and take into the threaded bosses 13 so as to clamp the face plate 12 in place. The shims 16, which may be either furnished in desired quantities with a number of the strike plates, or may be readily formed of sheet metal or cardboard, by the user, are perforated at 17 to permit the passage of the threaded lugs 18. It is desirable that the face 18 of main body 10,
against which the strike plate 12 will abut when there are no shims, be depressed slightly below the outer faces of the cars 11, I
as clearly shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4:, so that, when no shims are used, the strike plate 12 will fit down between the ears, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. In this normal condition of use, the sides of the strike plate are similarly reinforced between the ears 11.
I claim as my invention:
1. A lock strike plate comprising a base piece having portions by which it may be secured in place, and a coiiperating strike piece fitted thereupon and separably mounted thereon to vary the distance of the striking face from the base piece, said base piece and said strike piece having registering openings for receiving a latch, and means for clamping the strike piece to the base piece with shims insertible between them to vary the position of the strike piece.
2. A look strike plate comprising a base piece provided with portions by which it may be readily attached in position and provided with a pocket at its outer face, a strike piece coiiperating with the base piece and provided on its rear face with a portion projectable into said pocket to hold the strike piece and base piece in a definite relative position against relative movement in the planes of such faces, and means for clamping the two parts together with shims insertible between them and the operating face of the strike piece at variable distances from the base piece.
3. A lock strike plate, comprising a base piece provided with portions by which it may be readily attached in position, a strike piece substantially corresponding in outline to said base piece and separably mounted thereon to permit the insertion of shims between them to vary the distance of the opcrating face of the strike piece from the base piece, the rear face of said strike piece and the front face of the base plate being provided with a coeperating positioning lug and socket.
4:. A lock strike plate, comprising a base piece provided with portions by which it may be readily attached in position, a strike piece separably mounted thereon to permit the insertion of shims between them to vary the distance of the operating face of the strike piece from the base piece, the rear face of said strike piece and the front face of the base plate being provided With a cooperatingpositioning lug and socket, and fastening means cooperating With said lug for securing it in the socket to hold the strike piece to the base piece.
A look strike plate, comprising a base piece having portions by Which it may be secured in place, and a cooperating strike piece fitted thereupon and separably mounted thereon to vary the distance of the striking face from the base piece, and means ac- In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 29th day of November, A.
