Description

J. OTTNER.
lmppvement in Cupboard Latches.
` No. 132,771. Patented Nov. 5,1872.
JOSEPH OTTNER, OE NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO RUSSELL AND ERWIN MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT EN CUPBOARD-CATCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,721, dated November 5, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osErE OTTNEE, of N ew Britain,.in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain Improvements in Cupboard -Catches, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of the peculiar construction of the latch-Wiz., a latch with a concentric and eccentric face, and pivoted upon a pin and provided with an operating handle which extends from the concentric face, as hereafter shown and described 3 and, second, ofthe combination ot'said latch with the spring and case having a box and concentric flan gesall as herein set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a front elevation of a cupboarddatch which einbodies my invention, and Fi g. 2 is a horizontal section of the same on line rc x ot' Fig. l.
A designates the latch-case5 B, the striker; C, the latch proper; and D, its handle. Inside of the case A is a box or barrel, a, (see Fig. 2,) in `which I secure the latch C by means of a pin, b. From the pin b to the pointcthe edge of the latch C has an eccentric face, which "may be either in a straight or curved line.
The front edge of said latch, from the point c to the handleV l), I form concentrically With the pin I). The remaining portion of the latch is also concentrically formed, but it may be of other form, if desired. Two concentric flanges, d d, are formed on the front of the case A, the edges of which anges are about even with the front edge of the latch C. A spiral spring, n, is placed With one end resting in the corner of the box c and the other end upon a projection formed on the latch, as shown in Fig. 2.
To release the latch from the striker it is only necessary to press the handle l) to the right, when the latch oscillates on the pin l) and disengages from the striker B. In closing the door the striker engages with the eccentric face of the latchthat is, the portion between the pin b and point c-throws it back, and allows it to pass said striker, when the spring a throws it into the position shown in Fig. 2. In case the concentric portion of the latch is forced outward against the striker it Will force the latch more tirml y into it instead of releasing it therefrom.
By my invention I produce a cupboard-catch Which is simple in construction, is easily and conveniently operated, can be produced at a small cost, and is very compact, operating Well in a case less than an inch long, so that it is admirably adapted for use on sash-doors.
I claim as my invention- I. The latch C, with -its concentric and ec centric faces meeting at the point c when said' latch is pivoted upon the pin l), and is provided with the handle D extending outward from the concentric face, all substantially as described.
2. In combination With the foregoing the spring u and case A, the latter provided With the box a and concentric flanges d d, all substantially as and for the purpose described. JOSEPH OTTN ER.
