SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,545, dated November 1-, 1884.
Application filed February 23, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GI-IARLEs E. HART, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Door-Bolts, of which the following description and claim constitute the specification, and which is illus trated by the accompanying sheet of drawings.
This improvement furnishes means of security in door-bolts in addition to those characteristics of door-bolts in common use.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a front elevation of the bolt proper, not including the keeper, which latter is of the ordinary form of such keepers; and Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
A is the base-plate. B is the barrel. is the bolt. D is the annular groove cut in the periphery of the bolt. E is a small lever, the fulcrum of which is the pivot F, passing through lugs G and H, or one such lug, which latter are rigidly attached to the base-plate A. I is a stud projecting from the inner face of the smaller end of the lever, and passing through a hole in the wall of the barrel B, and adapted to engage with the groove D. J is a spiral spring resting in a recess in the common base of the lugs G and H, orone such lug, and supporting the larger end of the lever, and thus forcing the stud I to engage with the groove D whenever occasion requires. K is the knob by which the bolt 0 is moved to and fro. The shank of the knob works in the H-shaped slot in the barrel B, in the usual manner.
The mode of operation is as follows: WVhenever the knob K is moved to the left-hand side of the H-shaped slot, the stud I engages with the groove D and prevents all longitudinal motion of the bolt 0 until the larger end of the lever E is pressed against the spring J and the stud thus released from the gr00ve.
I am aware that a prior patent shows a door-bolt provided with a spring-pressed pin, which enters an orifice in the bolt and looks it when said bolt is in a given position, and I hereby disclaim the same.
I claim as my invention- 1 The combination of the base-plate A, having the barrel B, and oneor more lugs, Gand H, upon one side thereof, the bolt 0, having the knob K and groove D, and the springpressed lever E, mounted on said lug or lugs, and having the stud I at the end nearest the bolt (1, said groove D and leverE being relatively located so as to engage when the bolt is thrown into its position for locking, sub
