UNITED STATES,
PATENT OFFICE.
HIRAM MASON, OF NELSONVILLE, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAMES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 191,904, dated June 12, 1877 application filed May 19, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM MASON, of Nelsonville, in the county of Athens and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Hames; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation ofa front view of my improved hames, and Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of the body and extensible portion of the same.
This invention has relation to hames; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the adjustable extensions of the branches, and the fastenings thereof, as hereinafter shown and described.
The object of this invention is mainly to provide an adjustable hames, which can be readily fitted to a collar of any size, whether for a horse or a mule.
lug or ear, a, which is designed to engage with the slot of the extension. To the lower ends of the branches A the hams-fastening is applied. This may be of any ordinary construction, or such as is shown in the drawings, wherein c designates a swinging latch, and d a longitudinally-concave seat-plate or hearing, slotted or open at e for the reception of the fastening ring g. B represents the extensions or adjustable slides, which are designed to be connected to the upper portions of the hamebranches. Each slide or extension plate is slotted in its upper portion, as indicated at b, and is provided with a series of perforations, n, for the passage of the clamp-screw s, whereby its position with relation to the main branch A is fixed, the slot b being first passed over and engaged with the end lug a. The clamp-screw 8, being relatively fixed in position on the face of the hames, may be provided with a harness-ring, 1'. At their upper ends the extensions are provided with eyes, loops, or ordinary means for attaching the upper fastening.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The hams-branches A, having the end lugs a, in combination with the slotted extensions B and clamp-screws s, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above 1 have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
I HIRAM MASON. Witnesses:
WM. ARTZ,
W. G. HIOKMAN.
