Description

DENNIS G. LlTTLEFIELD, 0F ALBANY,
NEW YORK.
Design No. 4,062, dated May 24, 1870.
DESIGN POR STOVE-DOORS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same I, DENNIS G. LITTLEFIELD, of the ety and county of Albany, and State of New York, have invented a new Design for Hinged Stove-Doors, of which thc following is a specification.
My improved design relates to the. class of doors employed upon the sides of cylindrical stoves, (suoli doors usually containing mica, for the purpose of rendering the lire visible,) when the same are hinged at the base, to open by swingilig/downward, as in LIT- TLEFIELDS Morning-Glory Stoves, and its object is to conceal the hinges by which the door is held to the stove, and, at thesame time, give a graceful ornamental appearance to that part, and also to enable the parts of the hinges which are caslrwith the door to be drilled with the same ease as if they were not concealed, or were cast upon a plain instead of curved surface.
Figure 1 is a front view of the door;
Figure 2, au end or bottom view; and
Figure 3, au edge or side view.
Fig. 1 shows the design of the door A, which coniss of a cast-metal frame, having two mica lights,
D being a panel or section of the stove-case, to which it is hinged, and
O, a turn-catch, for holding the door when closed.
The base ofthe door is formed of two scrolls, starting upon either side of the central bead a, and drooping, at b b, low enough to cover the hinges c d, (Iig. 2,) which lie behind them.
They are then curved upwardly, at e e, suiiiciently high that a right line through the axis of the hinges, tangential with the stove-case, shall pass behind the volutes b b, below the edge of e e, and in front of the smaller terminal volutes ff.
This is the direction in which the drill-spindle is required to pass (as shown by dotted lilies in figs. 1 and 2) to form the holes for the pins or rivets g g, and it will be readily apparent that, owing to the door being necessarily the segment of a. circle correspond ing with the cylindrical body of the stove, the hinges could not be drilled, if covered by the front portion of the door, if thispart of it was of ordinary shape.
The two scrolls terminate iu a similar volute, but of less size than the central ones, and together form a suitable base or plinth ornament for the arched mica openings B B, thus adapting a beautiful form to a useful purpose, since, wit-hout it, the hinges could not be applied to curved falling doors, in a mannerto conceal them, without incurring much diliculty and expense in the manufacture.
I claim as my invention- The design for a concealed hinge stove-door, as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
