DESIGN.

W. PEARL.
SEAT POST FOR CYCLES.
fApphcll-iofikfl Septjl. 1899') UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM PEARL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DESIGN FOR A SEA -POST FOR CYCLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 31,689, dated October 1'7, 1899.
Application filed September 14,1899v Serial No. 730,524. Term of patent 3i years.
To all whom it may (OH/00PM.
lle it known that I, WILLIAM PEARL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Chicago, conntyof Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented and produced a new and original Design for Seat-Posts for Cycles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying d raw-- ings, forming part thereof.
Figure l is a view of a seat-post, showing my design when seen from a point to the rear and slightly above said seat-post. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the seat-post, taken from a point located obliquely beneath and at the side thereof. The rear lug appears slightly foreshortened.
As shown in the drawings, the leading or material feature of my design consists of the long and slender neck Act the rear lug l3 and the gradually-diverging branches C 0, forming the fork at the lower portion of said lug. The cross-section of said neck A at the most contracted portion D thereofis approximately circular, and the greatest length of said rear lng B, exclusive of the insets or stocks E E at the lower extremities thereof, more or less closely approximates a length equal to four diameters of said portion D. When viewed from the side, the upper and lower outlines of said rear lug I; are substantially parallel, but converge slightly as they approach the said insets or stocks E E. \Vhen viewed from a point to the rear and slightly above, as in Fig. 1, the lateral outlines of said rear lug ll present sweeping and graceful curves symmetrically placed with reference to a line extending longitudinally through the center of said lug. Said lateral outlines diverge from said contracted portion D to meet the lateral outlines of the sleeve F of said seat-post and also diverge from said portion D as they approach thelower extremities of said lug; but the curvature of said lateral outlines decreases as the said lower extremities are approached, and before said lower extremities are reached said lateral outlines become substantially rectilinear.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The design for aseat-post for cycles, as here in shown and described.
\VILLIAM PEARL.
