UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW' BARROVVS, OF EAST ST. LOUIS, ILLINOIS.
DESIGN FOR A RAILROAD-SPIKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 26,408, dated December 15, 1896.
Application filed April 22, 1896. Serial No. 588,644. Term of patent 14 years.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, ANDREW BARnows, of the city of East St. Louis, St. Clair county, State of Illinois, have invented a new and original Design for Railroad-Spikes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompan ying drawings, forming a part hereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a railroadspike embodying my design. Fig. 2 isafront elevation of the railroad-spike of my design.
The leading feature of my design consists in a hexagonal-faced point for the body or shank of the spike, certain of which faces are broader than the others and certain of the edges formed by pairs of the faces meeting being serrated or notched.
1 indicates the body or shank of the spike, and 2 the head, these being of the usual contour and size. The lower point of the spike is made wedge-shaped, the front and rear faces 3 of this wedge-shaped portion being eontiuuations of the front and rear faces of the body of the spike, and the extreme lower edge or point of meeting between these faces 3 is much narrower than the point where said faces join with the original front and rear faces of the body of the spike. The material of the spike at the lower end of the side faces of said spike bulges or protrudes outwardly, as indicated by 4, at points just below the lines where the front and rear faces 3 meet with the front and rear faces of the body of the spike, and the side faces of these bulgedont portions are concaved, as indicated by 5. By forming these protruding or bulged portions the pairs of triangular faces 6 are formed below the eoncaved faces 5, said pairs of triangular faces joining on three sides with the outside edges of the faces :3, and the edge formed at the meetingpoint of these faces is notched or serrated, as indicated by T, the points between the notches pointing upwardly. \\'hen the spike is viewed in front or rearelevaiion, the extreme outer points of the protruding or bulged p n ti HIS i-lie in ti e same horizontal plane, but in vertical planes somewhat beyond the planes occu pied by the original side faces of the body of the spike.
1 claim- The design for a railroad-spike comprising the body, the head, the front rear faces 3 meeting at their lower ends, and joined to the front rear faces of the body of the spike at their upper ends, the bulges 4 at the lower ends of the side faces of the spike, the coneaved faces 5 upon the upper sides of said bulges, the triangular faces 6 below said concaied faces and the notches 7 formed in the meeting edges of said triangular faces, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANDREW BARROWS.
