TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, P. W. VAIL, of Newark, Essex county, New Jersey, have invented a newand improved Design for Hats; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to understand the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, and which represents a perspective view of my improved hat.
This invention relates to a novel design for felt and other hats, and consists in arranging stripes of a darker or lighter color as the ground color of the hat, (as the case may be,) in such a manner that they diverge from the centre or crown of the hat radially towards the rim; and that these stripes are each in the form of a triangle, the sides of which are radii diverging from the centre of the hat, the base being formedon the circumference or periphery of the hat. These stripes may be made of' ditierent colors in the same hat, or different colors may be used in each stripe, as may be desired. Any suitable shade or color may be used. The same kind of ornamentation maybc used on the inside of the hat, thereby finishing it, and not requiring the use of the lining now generally used. A represents a hat, made of any suitable material, and in any suitable shape, and provided with stripes B B, of' any suitable shade and color, and of the form above described. It is evident that any suitable number of such stripes may be arranged oil a hat.
I claim as new, und desire to secure by Letters Patent- The desigirfor ornamenting a hat, as shown and set forth.
P. W. VAIL.
