No. 23,509. Patented July 24, 1894.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
lilltfllilt BARK, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSlGXOlt 'l() 'llll-I BRUNSWICK- IlALKE-(OLLICXDER COMPANY, ()l- ()lllf).
DESIGN FOR A COUNTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 23,509, dated July 24, 1894.
Application filed June 25. W94- Serial No. 515.699- Tenn of patent 7 years.
To all whom Lt may concern.-
Be it known that I, BIRGER BARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and Stateof Illinois, have inventedacertain new and useful Design for Counters, of which the following isadescription, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
My new design relates more particularly to counters for bar fixtures and will be so illustrated and described, though its essential features may be applied to counters used for other purposes.
The design is fully shown in the perspective view of a counter in the accompanying drawing.
The flat top of the counter rests at its forward side upon the upper ends of a series of brackets or bracket-shaped supports, one at each end of the counter and several intermediate the and ones. The front side of the counter is separated vertically into a number of sections or divisions by these brackets. Each section is composed of horizontal panel or molded work or both and its profile or general outline conforms to that of the forward faces of the brackets. The several sections are set in between the brackets slightly in rear of the front faces of the latfor, so that the brackets are projected from the surface of the counter and have the ap pearance of ornamental pilasters separating its several sections and supporting its top. The distinguishing feature of the design consists in this appearance of the front side of the counter, produced by the series of bracketa supporting the top of the counter and the sections set in between them in rear of their front faces, so as to project the latter from the surface of the counter, said sections being com posed of horizontal panel or molded work and conforming in profile or general oul line to that of the front faces of the brackets.
In the counter shown in the drawing the profile orgeneral outline of the front side consists of a short lower vertical portion or base, it rearwardly projected portion above the same, and an outwardly and upwardly curved portion connecting the upper edge of such rearwardly projected portion with the under side of the counter-top. The lower ends of the front sides of the brackets have vertical faces co-incident with the lower vertical portions or bases of the sections interposed between them. From these lower vertical faces the forward sides of the brackets are curved rearwardly in concave lines and thence outwardly and upwardly in convex lines to the under surface of the front edge of the counter-top,terminating at their upperends in hori- 6o zoutal turned pieces abutting against said top. The middle portions of the sections between the brackets, co-incident with the rearwardly curved portions of the latter, are composed of vertical panel spaces inclosing plain panels 55 surrounded by beaded moldings, each panel space being connected to the vertical face or base of the section below and in front of the same by an inclined surface projecting forward beyond the upper edge of said base. The portion of the section above the panel space is curved outwardly and upwardly in a. general convex line conforming to that of the upper ends of the front sides of the brackets. Its lower part is composed ofhorizontallydis- 7 5 posed volute molding and its upper part of a broad slightly convex or flat plain surface interposed between it and the under surface of the counter-top. It will thus be seen that while the profile of the section between the bracketsis of irregularoutline it yet conforms in its general shape to the profile of the brackets, thereby giving a harmonious appearance to the entire front side of the counter.
In the present instance there are five of the brackets, one at each end of the counter and three intermediate the same at equal distances apart. The outer sides of the and brackets are exposed at the ends of the counter and constitute the forward portions or 9 halves of said ends. 'lhcir roar edges are vertical and the portions of the ends of the counter in rear of the brackets are composed of plain panel-spaces. Each of the ends of the counter has a base corresponding to the base of the front side of the counter, composed of a thin vertical block and an inclined or beveled cappioco corresponding to the inciined surfaces which connect the vertical Having thus fully described my invention, bases of the sections of the front side of the I ciaim to counter with the panel-spaces above and in The design for acounterherein shown and rear of the same. described.
The front edge of the top of the counter in BIRGER BARK. the present instance is provided with a mold- Witnesses: ing projecting upward and forward from the EDWARD D. SELLMANN,
same and constituting an arm-rest and guard. ED'ARD RECTOR.
