GEORGE ll. HANCOCK, OF PLAINFHCLD, NE\\' .llfilth'FY.
DESIGN FOR A ROOFING-TILE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 20,408, dated. December 16, 1890. Application tiled October 23, 1890- Serial No. 369,621. Term of patent 14 years,
To all whom it "my concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE ]I lLuseot-ma citizen of the United States, residingin Plainfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented and produced a new and original Design for Rooting or Sheathing Tiles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
The design relates to a clay or other tile in which the ornamental effects are produced by its contour.
The design consists of a tile the outline of which is substantially of Gothic form audits surface of a gradually-rising curved contour, merging at or near theloweredges of the tile in a raised horn or nose.
In the accompanying illustrations Figure 1 illustrates a face View of a tile of the new design; Fig. 2, a transverse vertical section of the same; Fig. 3, a cross-section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
As illustrated, the tile is substantiall of Gothic form, provided at its upper sides a b with upturned flanges, its lowcrsidc being of curved form terminatingin a point. The contour of the surface ot the tile is substantially flat adjacent to the two upper sides a b, but gradually rises from all sides until it merges in a raised nose or horn e. The major portion of the surface of the tile rises from all sides in a concave cur\ 'c,whieh gradually increases in concavity to said nose or horn, with the exception of the lower side of the tile surface, which rises in a convex curve to the nose or horn, as shown, and these two oppositelycurved surfaces merge gradually into one another.
The ornamental eifect produced by this horn-surfaced tile is a marked one on account of thelight and shade thereon and the shadow produced by the horn.
\Vhat is claimed is- The design for a tile, substantially as described and shown.
In Witness whereof Ihave hereunto set my hand, this id day of October, A. l). 1890, in presence of two witnesses.
