tlllflltt'tl l ll. lAllCOCK, ()l ILAINFIELU, NEW JERSEY.
DESIGN FOR A ROOFING-PLATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 21,367, dated March 8, 1892.
Application filed May 14, 1890. Serial No. 351,810. Term of patent 14 years.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE II. HAP-COCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at llainfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented and produced a new and original Design for Roofing or Sheathing Tiles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part thereof.
The design relates to a clay or other tile, in which the ornamental architectural effects are produced by the contour, by the surface ornamentation of the tile, and by the association of the contour and the surface ornamentation.
In the drawings, Figure 1 illustrates a face view of a tile 01' tlie'new design, and Fig. 3 illustrates a number of such tiles in an as sembled condition laid in quineunx order, illustrating the effect of the surface ornamentation and the effect of the latter in conjunction with the shape or outline of the tile.
The design relates particularly to the exposed or lower face of atile, its upper portion partaking of various shapes.
As illustrated, the tile has diagonal upper sides It n, which bear upper interlocking flanges. The lower or exposed portion of the tile has two straight sides 1 r, with an irregular lower side, the surface A of said lower portion being in the main a plain surface. The
surface ornamentation of the tile is coniposed of two curved figures ll (1 upon the surface of the tile, which curved figures extend in opposite directions from the center of the tile toward the lower outer corners 41 thereof. The upper portiousof each of the curved figures l U terminate in scrolls r. The lower portions of the curved figures l3 conform and coincide with a portion of the outline of the lower edge of the tile, while that portion between the ligures l; (l is of the spade form fshown. The surface of the tile may be otherwise ornamented by a conventional branch ornament E, as shown, extending into the spade formfat the lower portion of the tile, as shown in Fig. 2.
It maybe stated that when a number of tiles are associated, as in Fig. 2, the contiguous curved figures forming a part of the sur face ornamentation of the tile meet at the points rt to form a greatercnrved figure, both ends of which terminate in the scrolls n, and that the outline at the lower edge of the tile forms a continuous undulating line, asshown.
\Vhat is claimed is The design for a tile, snbstautiallyas shown and described.
