FACING FOR BRICKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 536,433, dated March 26, 1 8.95.
Application filed August 6, 1894. Serial No. (NO 1101191) To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. KOLB, acitizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State-of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Facings for Bricks, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a facing formed as hereinafter described and which may be readily affixed toa brick to produce a tile or other ornamental effect thereon, and a weather protection therefor.
It also consists inproviding the facing with beads on the borders thereof, and interlocking flanges as hereinafter described and claimed facing to bricks at the tie thereof. r
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings: A designates a facing for a brick, the latter being shown at B, said facing being channeled or recessed in its rear face to receive the front of the brick, as shown at O the rim which forms the channel or recess projecting at a right angle from the rear of said facing. On one end and one side of the said rim of the facing are beads respectively D and E, the same projecting from the outer walls of said rim, and on the other side and end of said rim of the facing are flanges respectively F and G, the same projecting from the outer walls of the facing, and being set back from the front thereof, thus forming the vertical shoulders H, and the horizontal shoulders H on the rim rearward of said flanges F, it being seen that when the facings are laid on the bricks, the beads D and E of one facing rest against the flanges F andzG of the adjacent facing and are seated in the shoulders H of the latter facing, thus interlocking the facings, and forming a continuity of the same. ings are of the form of tiles or other ornamental shape, and constructed partly or entirely of enamel, glass or other suitable material, so long as the front surface is of such material, it being also seen that the beads D and E are designed to be of a different color from the body of the facing, thus producing the eifect of mortar lines between the facings, and likewise forming tight joints between the facings.
Owing to the horizontal shoulders H, a channel'H exists between the horizontal portion of the rims of adjacent facings for the reception of mortar and the consequent cementing of saidrims to each other by the mortar in said channel.
The facings may be readily laid and re-- moved when desired, and while they serve to produce beautiful effects, they are highly protective'and beneficial in their nature to the bricks to which they are affixed, thus admitting of the employment of bricks of a lower grade.
In Fig. 6 I show shoulders Joutside of the rear ends of the rims of the facings, the outer sides of the bricks and of said rims being flush, by which provision the bricks may belaid with less mortar between them, but in other respects the facings aresimilar to those shown in Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive.
It will also be seen that the fac- In Fig. 7 I show mortar-line borders or beads being at the front of said facing and said flanges F and G being set back from said beads, with the horizontal'shoulders H"rear ward of said flanges, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a brick, of a facing having a right angular rim projecting rearward therefrom, and beads projecting from the one end and one side of said rim, said adjacent side of the facing being flush, said brick having its front portion fitted within parts being combined substantially as de- 10 said rim, substantially as described. scribed.
3. A hollow facing having a rim, and beads 7 ,1 T J 5 and flanges on said rim, the flanges being set CHARLES lion back from said beads in combination with a Witnesses: brick having a shouldered portion fitting in .TNO. P. KOLB, said rim, the outer side of said brick and the JQS. F. SOHEsWQI-IL,
