DESIGN FOR A ROOFING-TILE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 20,402, dated December 16, 1890.
Application filed May 14, 1890. Serial No. 351,809. Term of patent 14 years.
To all whom it n'my concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE II. BABeocK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plain- Iield, in the county of Union and State ofNeW Jersey, have invented and produced a new and original Design for Roofing or Sheathing Tiles, of which the following is aspecification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
The design relates to a clay or other tile; and it consists of a tile of substantially diamond shape and in a surface ornamentation consisting of intersecting diagonal bands, and, further, in a diamond-shaped tile having as a surface ornamentation diagonally-arranged intersecting bands.
In the accompanying illustrations, Figure l is a face view of a tile of the new design; and Fig. 2 illustrates a number of such tiles in an assembled condition laid in quineunx order, illustrating the effect of the shape of the tile and its surface ornamentation in conjunction with one another.
The design relates particularly to the exposed or lower face of a tile, its upper portion partaking of various shapes.
As illustrated, the tile has diagonal upper sides (I. n, which bear upper flanges. The lower or exposed portion of the tile has a plain surface A and is of diamond shape,
formed by the diagonal lines I) I), which terminate at their upper ends in two diagonal bands I intersecting one another substantially at the center of the tile, forming an oblique cross on the surface of the tile, and in effect dividing the surface of the tile up into small diamonds. At the intersecting point of the diagonal bands there is shown a rosette c, the upper and lower petals of which are prolonged to harmonize with the general diamond-shaped character of the tile and its surface ornamentation. The surface of the bands may in turn be ornamented, as shown, by a lattice-work formed by ridges r c and depressions (I (I.
It maybe stated that when a number of tiles of the new design are associated together as in Fig. 2 each diagonal band will form in ap pearance a continuous band running diagonally across the associated tiles and intersecting with other diagonal bands extending in the opposite direction, imparting a latticework appearance.
\Vhat is claimed is- The design fora lilo, substantially as de scribed and shown.
