' H. MITCHELL METAL FAOBD BUILDING BLOCK.
No. 337,693. Patented Mar. 9, 1886.
[c )i C I 52 B I l v I I/RI J WITNESSES:
UNITED STATES PATENT CEFIcE.
JOSEPH H. MITCHELL, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
METAL-FACED BUILDING-BLOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,693, dated March 9, 1886, Application filed June 29,1885. Serial No. 170,158. (No model.) I
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosEr H. MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal-Faced Building- Blocks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates tobuilding-bricks, and the object of the invention is to combine with unburned material-such as clay-a metallic covering, thereby obviating the necessityof burning the clay, and providing a buildingblock impervious to water and strong and durable.
The invention consists of a dried or unburned brick, of clay or like substance, provided with a metalliecovering, as will behereinafter fully described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a building block or brick embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation. Fig. 3 is a view showing a corner-brick and a portion of a brick or block similar to that shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a side elevation.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the block or brick, which may be of any desired or suitable size.
B represents the metallic facing or covering which covers the entire front or exposed side or face of the brick, and has its edges turned back over the upper and under sides or faces of the brick.
C designates bolts or equivalent fastenings, which may pass entirely through the brick or block from one turned edge to the other, or they may'extend from each turnedback edge a sufficient distance into the brick to hold the facing in place.
D represents straps secured to the upper and under facesof the bricks or blocks at one end, and secured to the inturned ends of the facing at their other ends to more firmly secure the latter in place, said straps being provided with cuts to form prongs or projections a, which are turned outwardly to serve to more effectively keep the bricks in place when the mortar is hardened, the mortar filling around said prongs a and rendering the displacement of the bricks impossible.
It will be seen that by my invention bricks can be manufactured and supplied without the expense and delay incident to the burning operation, and that a brick is provided which is thoroughly strong and durable.
I am aware of the patents to J ohnston, No. 114,945, dated May 16, 1871, and Schaifer, No. 180,194, dated August 18, 1876, and do not seek to claim anything shown or described in either. of said patents, my invention being limited to the construction set forth in the following claim.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim- As a new article of manufacture, an unburned brick provided on its exposed or wearing faces or surfaces with a covering of sheet metal, the edges of said metal being turned back over the edge of the brick, and thestrips secured to said edges of the metal and to the brick and slitted to form prongs which are turned outwardly, as set forth.
In testimonywhereof I affix my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH H. MPPCHELL.
Vitnesses:
J. S. HARRISON, G. B. PLAT'I.
