LEMUEL PATTERSON, OF WARREN, PENNSYLVANIA.
LINING FOR WALLS.
sPEOIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 766,726, dated A g s 2, 1904.
Application filed February 3, 1904.
To (HZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEMUEL PATTERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at (Varren, in the county of Warren and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Lining for falls; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to a lining for walls; and it has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient lining for brick and other masonry walls adapted to prevent dampness and sweating and capable of receiving a coating of plaster, wall-paper, or other wallcovering.
A further object of the invention is to provide a lining of this character adapted to be readily applied to a wall and capable of being securely fastened in position and adapted also to increase the strength of the structure on which it is employed.
\Vith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a wall provided With a lining constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of one of the blocks or sections, showing the front face thereof. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the rear or inner face of the same. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the fastening devices.
The lining which is designed to be applied to brick and other masonry walls is composed of blocks or sections 1 and 2 of square and oblong form, as shown, the square blocks being smaller than the oblong blocks and being arranged at the ends of the alternate tiers or rows in order that the latter may break joints with each other, as shown. The blocks are designed to be constructed of concrete or other plastic material and may be of any desired composition, and they may be molded in any Serial No. 191,814- (No model.)
desired manner. They are provided at their corners with inwardly-extending lugs or projections 3, offsetting the body portions of the blocks or sections from the wall 4 to provide a continuous intervening air-space, whereby dampness and sweating are effectually prevented. The oblong blocks are also provided at the centers of their opposite sides and edges with inwardly-extending lugs or projections 5, adapted to abut against the wall in the same manner as the other lugs or projections 3. The blocks are firmly united by cement or similar adhesive or binding material and are provided with side and end grooves 6 and 7 for the reception of the same.
The blocks or sections 1 and 2 are securely secured to the wall by means of fastening devices 8 and are provided with corner notches 9, forming round holes when the blocks or sections are assembled, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The fastening devices, which are provided with suitable heads, have arrow-shaped spurs or wings 10 to prevent them from being withdrawn accidentally and to enable them to obtain a firm hold at the joints of the wall. The oblong blocks or sections are provided at their sides with centrally-arranged slots 11, preferably adapted to form an opening of greater size than the shanks of the fastening devices and adapted to permit a limited adjustment of the same to enable the fastening devices to be properly driven into the joints of the walls irrespective of any slight variations in the distance between the same. The space around the fastening devices is designed to be filled with cement, whereby the parts will be perfectly tight when the lining is complete.
The solid blocks or sections are provided at their outer faces with either smooth or rough surfaces, accordingly as they are designed to receive a coating of plaster, wall-paper, or other wall covering or coating. The blocks, besides providing a perfectly dry wall, are adapted also to increase the strength of the structure to which they are applied.
What I claim is 1. A lining for walls comprising a series of blocks or sections provided at their inner or rear faces with projections or lugs, arranged to fit against a wall to space the body portions wall, and fastening devices passing through the openings formed by the notches for securing the blocks or sections to the wall, substantially as described.
In'testimony whereof I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
LEMUEL PATTERSON.
