IMPROVEMENT IN ROOFlNG-TILES.

Specication forming part of Letters Patent N0. 157,392, dated December 1, 1874; application filed October 13, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LoUIs HAMEL, of the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roofing and Paving Tiles, of which the followingis aspeciflcation and I do hereby declare that in the same is contained a full, clear, and exact description of my said invention, reference being had to the accom panying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

My invention relates to a tile constructed in such a manner as to be adapted to form, in connection with corresponding tiles, a plain, watertight, and unobstructed outer surface, and a covering alike applicable to dat and inclined roofs ot' buildings and pavements.

In the description of my invention which follows, due reference must behad to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a top view of a series of my improved tiles. Fig. 2 is a view of the under side of one of the tiles; and Figs. 3 and 4, respectively, sectional views ofthe tiles upon the lines o w and :c y.

Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in all the iigures.

A represents the body of the tile, which, to lighten it, is recessed at its under side, and ribbed to give it strength and compensate for the reduction in material. Two adjoining edges of the tiles are depressed, the depressions which are marked a being located Iabout centrally of the thickness of the tile, and of a uniform depth. The remaining edges are provided with extensions or tongues b, of a size adapting them to rest within the depressions or grooves c in the contiguous tiles. The under side of the tile is provided with a triangular projection, c, designed to engage with strips secured to the roof proper or to the foundation of the pavement, to pre-vent displacement of the tiles. The tiles, constructed as described, are of a common size and shape, and, wh en fitted together and the joints treated with cement or mortar, form a watertight covering for roofs, with an outer surface uuobstructed by any projecting parts.

I claim, as one advantage possessed by tiles constructed according to my invention, the distribution of the weight or strain applied to one or more tiles to the entire system, by reason of their rigidity, the combination of parts forming practically a solid and continuous covering, possessing inherent strength to resist the displacement of any of its members.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

A roofing and paving tile having a plane upper surface and edges provided with the depressions a and projections b, the under side ot the said tile being recessed and ribbed and furnished with the triangular projection c, arranged with reference to the two contiguous projections b on edges of tile, as shown, substantially as described.
