.H .4 i... 1.6a... wl m h P mm UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY BERRY, (IF, SHELTON, ONNEUllCUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE DERBY SILVER COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR A BACK FOR BRUSHES, MIRRORS, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part. of Design N0.19,703, dated March 18, 1890.
Application filed February 24, 1890. Serial No. 341,625. Term of patent 7 years.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY BERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shelton, in the State of Connecticut, have invented and produced a new and original Design for a Back for Brushes, Mirrors, and other Articles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part. thereof, and which shows a plan View of a mirror-back incorporating my newly-invented design.
The leading features of my design consist in the form or outline of the back and in the surface ornal'nentation hereinafter described thereon. The leading element of said surface ornamentation consists of a scroll-frame of ornate configuration inclosing foliate and ornamental scrolls, all as hereinafter more particularly described.
In the drawing, A designates the back and B the handle therefor. The handle B is not sought to be claimed herein, but has been made the subject of a separate application bearing even date and filed herewith and se rially numbered 341,020. The main field of the mirror-back is occupied by the scrollframe C, consisting of the scrolls D E, forming the opposite sides of said frame and supplemented at their lower portion with the correspondingly-fluted and gradually diminishing and diverging scrolls F F, and at their upper portion with the conventional leaves G G, eonvolutions II II, and the series of diverging scrolls I, the whole being arranged and formed as shown in the drawing. The scroll-frame G forms a panel J, bearing the foliate spray I, of leaves and flowers, and also the central scroll N. The scrolls D E, forming the sides of the frame 0, extend upward from the base intermediate the handle B and back A, and consist of the crescent scroll N and series of fluted and upwardly diverging and widening scrolls I. The side scrolls I) E, from the crescent scroll N, diverge upward on curved lines to the widest point of the frame 0, and then converge toward the upper edge of the said frame, leaving rounded corners, in which are the convolutions H II above mentioned, and centrally between which is the dependent series of scrolls I.
\Vhen employing the design for the back of a brush and some other articles, the scrollframe 0, with the inclosed ornamental configurations, will alone be made use of; but where a more extended surface is required-such as for a mirror-backthe frame C above described will be surrounded by the field Q, having an outline substantially conforming to that of the frame and bearing the series of scalloped figures R, which extend outward from the top and sides of said frame and gradually lessen in size down said sides.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The design for a back for mirrors, brushes, and other articles, substantially as shown and described.
In witness whereof I hereunto affix my signature, at Shelton, Connecticut, this 18th day of February, 1890.
HENRY BERRY.
In presence of WEsLnY L. CLARK, .TNo. J. HADLow.
