Description

DGCUMENT NUMEER- n ll UNITED STATES PATENT n OFFICE.
CHARLES CASPER, OAF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT.
DESIGN FOR A HANDLE FOR SPOONS, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 16,506, dated February 9, 1886.
.Application tiled October 13, 1885. Serial No. 179,821. Term of patent 7 years.
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be itknowu that I, CHARLES CASPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented and produced a new and original Design for Spoons, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part thereof.
This invention has for its object to provide a new and original design for the ornamentation of the handles of spoons, forks, and similar articles of tableware.
In the drawing I have shown a face view of a spoon having its handle ornamented by my design.
The leading feature of my design consistsin the transverse parallel lines drawn near the upper end of the handle, the said lines being broken away centrally and the innerl ends of each line beingjoined by curved lines struck in the arc of a circle, the two curved lines being approximately concentric, the space within the curved lines being ornamented by a rosette, and that between the ends of the parallel lines by sprays, as of leaves.
A is the handle, which is provided on its face with lines @,arranged close to its edge and extended around its upper end and down to the point where the upper transverse line, B, is formed across the face of the handle. rlhe lines a are set slightly apart, and the space between them has short cross-lines a', presenting a milled appearance. A silnilar transverse line, B', is formed below and parallel to the line B, before referred to. These lines B B are broken away centrally, and the inner ends of each line B B are connected by curved lines C C struck from a common center, as shown. The space between the curved line has formed in it a rosette, D, extending from which between the lines B B are sprays E, as of leaves. The lines a extend downwardly from the lower line, B', to the upper one, F, of a series of transverse lines, F, G, H, and I.
Usually two each of lines F G H I are used, the lines being close together.
The space between lines F G and H I are ornamented with dots, and that between the lines G and H made slightly wider and ornamented by dots and a set of leaf -shaped gand lines L L, as shown.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
l. The herein shown and described design for handles for spoons or similar articles of tableware, consisting of the double lines a near the outer edge of the handle, cross-lines d between them, transverse lines interrupting the lines a a and spaced at intervals apart, and ornamentations placed in the intervals between the lines, substantially as shown.
2. In a design for the ornamentation of handles for spoons or similar varticles of tableware, the double lines B and B', spaced apart and broken away centrally, curved lines C C', uniting the corresponding ends of the broken lines and inclosing a nearly circular space, rosette D,located in the circular space, sprays E on each side of the rosette, and the scroll J, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a design for the ornamentation of handles for spoons or similar articles of tableware, the lines a B B', curved lines C C, rosette D, sprays E, scroll J, and lines F, G, H, and I, substantially as shown and described.
' CHAS. CASPER.
