UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN B. VAN HOUTEN, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
DESIGN Foe AN EAR-RING.
To a-Zl whom. it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J 011x B. VAN HOUTEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark,in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented and produced a certain new and original Design for Ear-Rings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the design, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of an ear-ring embodying my design, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, these views being deemed sufficient to illustrate the design.
The distinguishing feature of this design consists in the configuration of the lower or pendant portion of the ear-ring.
Referring to the drawings, A is a shieldshaped portion, to which the ear-wi reis secured, and from which the pendantportion B is suspended. Said pendant broadens, fan-like, from its upper portion, where it connects with the portion A, being widest at its lower part. Across the front face of the pendant the same is band-shaped, as at C, the band-shaped portion being downwardly curved toward the center and projecting forward, as shown in Fig. 2. The extremities of the band-shaped portion turn upwardly against the body portion of the pendant. The lower edges of the pendant e e e are curved approximately uniform with the band-shaped portion. The center portion, D, of the pendant projects downward from the body portion E, and is broadened toward the curved edge e.
What I claim as my design is- The design for an earring, the same consisting of an ear-ring having the pendant shaped substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have 4 hereunto set my hand this 16th day of November, 1883.
J OHN B. VAX HOUTEX.
