Patented July 19.1881.
U o t. N t D N Q1 ATTORNEY PATENT OFFICE.
LEVI III'IRUI'III, ()I" lllII..\I)lC[.PIII-\, AND WILLIAM II. lll-llitililt, ()l DAN- \'II.I,l-., PENNSYLVANIA.
DESIGN FOR A SAUCE-PAN HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION tornnng part of Design No. [2,361. dated July 19. I881.
To ((1! III/mm it hwy winger/z Be it known thatwe, I.l.\'[ [junta-1n, ol' lhiladelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, and Wu. ll. lit-moan, of Danvillc, county ol' Montour. and tate ot' lennsylvania, both citizens of the United States. have invented and produced a new and original design for Sauce-Pan IIandles, of which the following is a specification. reference be- 0 ing had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.
Figure 1 is a view of the back of the handle with the design there shown. Fig. .3 is a section showing the rihsot' the handle. Fig. is a section showing the ridge on the neck.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
IIcretot'ore sauce-pan handles have generally been made without ornament, or plain, o and we propose now to improve them by ornainenting them, as described.
The leading feature of our design consists in a series of penetrations or openings in the handle proper, with a raised ridge along the middle of the neck or shaft and an ornamental flange. In the extreme end of the handle we form an oval opening, A,the long axis of which is continuous with the axis of the handle. The margin of this opening is angular on one side, when viewed in cross-section. Extending below this opening A, on either side of the middle ridge, (7, is an elongated opening, u, having four angles, two of which are right; angles and one an acute, the other an obtuse angle. The upper part of these spaces or holes conforms to the shape of the lower end of the oval A. On each side of these spaces an is a ridge or line, the two outer ones forming the sides of the handle, and they extend downward and converge, as at E, to form the middle. ridge, G, on the neck F. Below the spaces a aare two other openings, b b, of the same width as the openings a a, having two right angles each, and each terminating by an arc of a circle at their lower margin. The outer or exposed margin of these spaces a a b b is angular, as shown on the section Fig. 3. Along the middle oi the neck F is raised a pyramidal ridge,
(i, which commences at a point a short dis tance below the terminal margins of the spaces I111; thence it extends down to the tlange II, and, reaching the middle line near the upper onethird, divides into three branches. one of which goes to the right and another to the left, then take a curved course outward on either side, and, on reaching the rivet-holes I I, makea single turn about them. The third portion of the ridge G continues on along the median line, gradually lessening in size to the lower margin. The tlange H has a smooth surface apart from the ridgesJ I I. The. lllzll gin extends outward at a right angle to, right and left of, the neck F for some distance, then sweeps round in a curved line toward the median line till it reaches a line which would be continuous with the marginal lines of the neck F, when it swings outward away from the me dian line a short distance outside of the marginal line of the neck F, when it describes another are of a circle toward the median line, when the two margins meet in a pointed depression at the median line.
\Vhat we claim, therefore, is-
1. The design for a sauce-pan handle, consisting of five openings or holes A,a a b b, with ridges composing the margins,as herein shown and described.
2. The design for a sauce-pan handle, consisting of a neck with a raised ridge extending along the median line continuous with the combination of ridges on the flange or car, as herein shown and described.
3. The design for a sauce-pan handle, consisting of a flange or ear with ridges extendin g over its surface, consisting of two curved portions and one straight portion, and a margin composed of a combination of arcs otcircles, as herein shown and described.
