Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE I'IIRAM W. IIAYDEN, CF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO HOLMES, BOOTH du HAYDENS, Ol" SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR FORKS, SPOONS, 80C.
Speeiiication forming part ol' Design No. l 1,3 [el: dated August, 5, 1879; application filed May 16, 1879. [Term of patent 14 years] To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, .Hman W. HAYDEN, of the city of VVaterbnry, in the county of New Haven, in the State of Connecticut, have originated and designed a pattern which may be used on the handles of forks, knives, spoons, or in any manner for ori'lamentation, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying photograph, which is hereby made part of this specification.
The nature of my design is fully represented in the accompanying photograph, to which reference is made. My design is there shown upon the handle of a teaspoon.
In said photograph, Figurel shows the front, and Fig. II the back, of a tea-spoon handle ornamented with my design.
In Fig. I the upper rim of the handle is a plain circular border-line, from which, down to a corresponding plain circular border-line marked A, the handle is embossed with raised diagonallinesconvergingintopoints, thespaces between which are also embossed, all being as shown in accompanying photograph. From said plain circular border-line marked A, down to a plain horizontal border-line marked B, the handle is embossed with plain raised diagonal lilies, the spaces between which are embossed with horizontal and diagonal lines, and various figures, all being as shown in accompanying photograph. From said plain horizontal border-line marked B, down to the plain horizontal border-line marked C, the handle is embossed with raised diagonal lines converging into points, the spaces between which are embossed, as shown in accompanying photograph. From said horizontal border-line marked C, to the line marked D, the handle is plain, but for a branch of bamboo or other equivalent crossing diagonally between said lines C and D, having a joint or ioints from which leaves are growing, and a buttery with extended wings or other equivalent device in a corner opposite said branch. From the line marked D, to the line marked E, the handle is embossed with diagonal and horizontal lines and other figures, as shown in accompanying photograph. From the line E points depend, as shown in accompanying photograph.
In Figs. I and II lines lettered with the same letter are continuations of same lines around the handle, and duplicates of one another, as shown in accompanying photograph.
In Fig. II the pattern is the same as in Fig. I down to and including the plain circular border-line marked A. From said plain circular border-line marked A, down to the plain horizontal line marked B, the handle is plain, as shown in accompanying photograph. From and including said plain horizontal border-line marked B, toand including the plain horizontal borderline marked C, the handle is embossed in the same manner as between the lines marked B and C, in Fig. I, and is a continuation around the handle of that part of the pattern. From the horizontal borderline marked C, to the line marked D, the 11andle is plain, but for a branch or other equivalent with a bird perched thereon, and an embossed quadrant of a circle in one corner, all as shown in accompanying photograph. From the line marked D, to the line marked E, the
handle is embossed in the same manner as be tween the lines marked D and E, in Fig. I, and is a continuation around the handle of that part of the pattern. From the line E points depend as from the line marked E in Fig. I. i
The designs on each side of the handle from the lines marked D are exactly the same.
At the line marked `l), in Figs. I and I I, the handle is slightly enlarged, so as to produce the eiect of the embossed part between the lines D and E, being wrapped around the handle.
This design may be reversed, using the back for the front,` and the front for the back, or either may be used. alone for ornamentation.
I know that birds and branches and butteries are old in designs; and I do not claim them except in combination with the other parts of my design.
'What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The ornamental design of the shape and configuration of the handle for forks and spoons, consisting in an arched end with converging straight or nearly straight edges, and offsets at each edge of' the handle near the middle, and converging curved edges extend ing to near the junction of the handle with the fork or bowl, substantially as described and represented.
L). lhe design ol' the arched-end border of the Spoon, consisting in the curved ribs and intermediate zigzag ribs and smaller crossingribs, as represented.
3. The ornamental design of the end of the handle, consisting in the arched border with zigzag ribs, the straight band with zigzag ribs, the intermediate diagonal ribs, circles, resettes, and triangular ornaments, substantially as deseribed and represented.
