CHARLES W. T. DAVIES, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y.
NETHERGARMENT.
T o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. T. DAvIEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Nethergarments, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to a nether garment including drawers and trousers, and its object is to provide a support device therefor which may be attached to a button or fastening means upon a shirt or other upper body garment.
Inasmuch as the drawers will be supported by the trousers at the crotch, they 'are usually made quite loose at the waist about the crotch in order to strike this average. Unless some means of supporting them from the upper band is provided, they sag about the waist, causing eXasperating discomfort to the wearer. As every man is aware, however, it is far more comfortable to have the drawers loose and full than to have them especially arranged to iit tightly about the waist. Again, it is quite uncomfortable, if not unhealthful, to use a belt or other cincture around the figure at the waist for the purpose `ot' supporting the trousers or drawers.
Now the object of my present invention is to provide a support for the nether garment which will hold it up in front at the closure, thus preventing any uncomfortable sagging and at the same time allowing it to be made loose at the crotch and full about the hips, thereby avoiding any unhealthful constriction at the waist. For this purpose I provide the nether garment with a supplementary button-holed tab, loop or similar device, situated near lthe upper edge of the nether garment, and closely adjacent to its closure at the vertically central portion of the figure, so as to be adapted to engage with a button already provided in the closure of the upper or body garment, when the latter is worn inside of t-he lower garment. I prefer to place the supplemental tab upon the inner side of the under iap and behind the usual closure button.
In order that my invention may be clearly understood and its advantages apprehended, reference is made to the accompanying Specification of Letters Patent.

drawings, illustrating one embodiment thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a nether garment showing my supplementary buttonholed tab attached thereto; and Fig. 2 is a front elevation upon a. reduced scale of the same garment associated with a shirt, showing the manner of attaching the tab to a button of the closure of the upper garment.
In the nether garment illustrated, the closure is provided with the usual button-holes 1, in the outer ap, adapted to engage the corresponding buttons 2 upon the outer side of the under iiap. To the inner side of the under flap I secure the supplementary tab 3, provided with a button-hole 4. It will be observed that I prefer to place this buttonholed tab upon the under or button side of the flap and behind the usual upper button of the closure. When arranged in this manner with relation to the parts of the closure, the supplementary tab is iirst buttoned over the usual waist-line button of the shirt or upper body garment in the manner illustrated in Fig. 2. The flaps of the closure of the drawers may then be connected in the usual manner.
I have shown the nether garment supported by the usual outside shirt, but it may be likewise used in the same manner in connection with an undershirt.
It will be seen that my supplementary button-holed tab serves no function whatever in the closure of the nether garment, and that it is so situated and arranged that it can only serve a useful purpose in connection with a body garment with which it forms the connecting supporting link. It will be further observed that it connects with a button of the shirt which projects through upon the outer or button-hole flap of the shirt-closure, thus throwing the pull and strain in the direction of the closure of the shirt.
The great advantages to be-derived from my improvement in the manner of supporting nether garments will be understood and appreciated from the above description. My manner of supporting the nether garment has many advantages over the common method of providing a tab to the bottom of the shirt bosom which is buttoned over a button of the closure of the nether garment. Aside from the fact that it is far less of a disigurement, it is made of a soft and durable material, and being attached to a nether garment, does not undergo the starohing opa supplementary tab permanently secured 15 eration, as does the usual linen tab upon a to the inner side of the under iap member stiff-bosomed shirt, and is not subjected to of the closure of the nether garment and the same Wear in the laundrying. For the completely covered thereby, and provided E same reason, it is at all times pliable and is with a button-hole positioned and adapted Y therefore more easily handled and will last for engagement With a Closure-button on the 20 longer. Other advantages, in addition to median line of the upper garment.
