residing at a couch cover, though it might be applied in l but, of course,
many other ways and to many other devices. This application of it is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an end elevation of a couch, case or box to which my device has been applied.
Like parts are indicated by the same let-ter in all the igures.
A is the bottom, B the sides, and F the end of the box or case which is provided with the cover C.
E is a U shaped metal plate, rigidly attached to the end F2 of the box and having slots K and L in which are adapted to slide the bolts M and N which are rigidly attached to the lid C, and are held in position therein by the head which overlies the outer surface of the sheet. When the lid is moving into the position shown in dotted lines, the movable connect-ions operate as indicate the two bolts irst traveling upwardly in their respective slots andthe top bolt then descending in its slot.
It will be evident that while I have shown in my drawing an operative device, still many changes might be made both in size, shape and arrangements of parts without departing materially from the spirit of my invention, and I wish therefore, that these drawings be regarded as in a sense diagrammatic.
The use and operation of my invention has already been sufficiently disclosed. As previously stated, it can be applied in many different ways and Jfor many dierent uses. It is a combined support and hinge, being in fact, the device which serves as a hinge and at the same time holds the hinged object securely in position at the end of its movement. It also permits the lid to move without going beyond the vertical plane of the back of the box or case or other object to which the hinged lid or other part is at- AURAND, --a lids, etc.
d l l trunks, trunk trays, and all kinds of doors, It could also be used for such doors as stand in a vertical osition. It would only be necessary to mo ify its form to suit the different uses to which it would be put.
rIhe operation of the device shown in Fig. 4 is easily understood. The parts are so arranged that the top is tilted backward,
it can be brought to any position by determining the length of the small slot L. In any event the lid moves without projecting very far over and is held in fixed position when atthe end of its movement. The structure and relation of the parts are such, that, when the lid is raised, it is substantially wholly within the vertical planes in which the exterior surfaces of the receptacle lie, so that the lid may be thus operated without moving the receptacle away from the wall or the like, against which it may be standing.
I claim:
1. rI`he combination with a receptacle and hinged lid, of means permitting the lid to be displaced inwardly and bodily upwardly relative to the receptacle, said means comprising a plurality of straight slots at an angle one with the other and one above the other.
2. The combination with a receptacle and hinged lid, of means permitting the lid to be displaced inwardly and bodily upwardly relative to the receptacle, said means comprising a plurality oit straight slots at an angle one with the other and one above the other, the upper of said slots substantially vertical.
3. The combination with a receptacle and hinged lid, of means permitting the lid to be displaced inwardly and bodily upwardly relative to the receptacle, said means comprising a plurality of straight slots at an angle one with the other and one above the other, the lower of said slots at an angle with the horizontal.
4. The combination with a receptacle and hinged lid, oi? means permitting the lid to be displaced inwardly and bodily' upwardly relative to the receptacle, said means cornprising a plurality of straight slots at an angle one with the other and one above the tached. It could be used in connection with l other, the upper of said slots substantially 5 displaced inwardly and bod Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by
angle one with the other and one above the other, a recess in the upper extremity of one of said slots at an angle to said slot.
