llllll NITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
VILLIAM A. TAYLOR, OF VASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GEORGE WV. LEESINTZER, OF SAINTE PLACE.
MAP-EXHIBIT() R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,805, dated June 4, 1889. Application led October 22, 1887. Serial No. 253,096. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. TAYLOR, of Washington city, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Map-Exhibitors, of which thc following is a specification.
My invention is an improved m ap-exhibitor; and it consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinio after described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved exhibitor, parts being' broken away. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the exhibitor, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on line x of Fig. 2.
The framing comprises a base A, sides B B, back C, front piece D, at the top of which is provided a shelf or rest d, and the top E. The front D only extends for aboutV half the 2o height of the device, the space above being open, so the maps may be readily seen when elevated in the manner hereinafter described.
The sides B are provided on their inner sides with vertical guides b for the front slide E and the maps or charts F. The front slide E is arranged in the front guides b, and is movable down behind the fixed front D, or up to close the open front of the exhibitor, in order that the device may present a better ap- 3o pearance when not in use; also to exclude dust and the like at such time. The slide and the maps, charts, or similar objects F, which are suitably mounted, are connected by cords H with weights I, such cords H extending` 3 5 overpulleys J. These pulleys J are arranged in two series-an inner series j and an outer series j-the pulleys of said series alternating--that is to say, t-he pulleys of one series being in a line between the pulleys of the 4o other series, so that weights of the desired size may be employed in wells or boxes K of the smallest crosssectional dimensions, as will be readily understood from Fig. I. The guide-grooves for the maps terminate at their lower ends in different horizontal planes, gradually rising from front to rear, so that the maps when all lowered will project at their upper ends above those in front, so that any particular map may be readily picked out 5o of the collection and raised to view, straps or handles L being usually employed to facilitate the raising thereof. At their upper ends the guides extend to the tops of the sides B, so the maps may be readily inserted or removed by lifting the top E, which is hinged at e at its rear edge, to enable it to be conveniently lifted when so desired.
The sides B are provided wit-h doors4 M to the weight-wells, so that access may be `had thereto for adjusting the weights, or for other 6o desired purposes. Late-hes or hooks are arranged to secure the doors M. Any desired number of maps may be supported in the exhibitor, limited only by the number of guideslots and guide-pulleys, which may be increased as desired.
The device is convenient in handling the maps, prevents damage to or mutilation of the maps, an d forms a neat article of furniture, as shown. l 7o The exhibitor can be made of suitable size to accommodate any size of map, and in practice the edges of the maps are covered with sheet-brass, to stiffen and keep the maps in shape and to prevent their wearing. Vhere desired, the sliding front piece may have its panels of glass.
It will be understoodthat, if desired, a single weightworking from the back of the exhibitormaybe used instead of the side weights 8o shown.
The exhibitor can be made double front and supported so as to be revolved.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new isl. In a map-exhibitor, the combination of the sides having guides, the weights arranged outside of such guides, cords for connecting the weights with the maps, the short front piece, and the shelf provided thereon, all sub- 9o stantially as and for the purposes speciiied.
2. The map-exhibitor herein described, comprising the sides, thev short front piece terminating below the upper ends of the sides, the shelf d at lthe upper end of said front piece, the maps movable in guides in said sides, the weights supported in wells in the sides, and the cords connecting the maps and weights, substantially as set forth.
3. In an exhibitor, substantially as described, the combination, With the framing having guides for the maps, &c., of the guidepulleys arranged in two series-an inner series and an outer series-the pulleys of one series being arranged in line between those of the other series, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
Ll. The exhibitor, substantially as herein described and shown, consisting of the base, the sides having guides which terminate at their lower ends in different horizontal planes, and extend at their upper ends to the upper ends of the sides, the front piece and the top hinged, whereby it may be moved from over the guides of the side pieces7 substantially as set forth.
5. As an article ef eice-furniture, a mapehest constructed and arranged to hold a series of maps sliding in vertical grooves and being keptin position for easy inspection in parts by counterbalance-Weights alone, the said chest having right and left double sides7 forming two accessible lateral receptacles for the hanging and handling ef the maps, and provided with a sliding front door or slide, substantially as set forth.
