Be it known that I, SAMUEL H. FANNING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas andState .of Texas, have invented certain new and-useful Lmprovements in CombinedDesks and Map- Cabinets, of whichthe following is a specification,

This invention relates to improvements in combined desks, blackboard supports, and cabinets for supporting maps, charts, scrolls for educational data, .and the like, and has for one of its objects to improve the con- ,struction and increase the efficiency and utilityof devices of this character.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be quickly changed from a writing desk to a blackboard or drawing board support without detaching any of the parts.

Another object of the invention is vto provide an apparatus includinga casing having a scroll device and a movable desk attachment which when closed covers and protects the scroll device.

Another object .of the invention is to provide a holder for a plurality of maps or charts wound upon spring rollers and supported within a cabinet or casing having a movable desk attachment over which the maps or charts are adapted to be drawnand thereby supported when in use.

Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claim; and in. the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the .invention- J 7 Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved device with the combineddesk and blackboard member in open position;

Formed within the space between the transverse member 16 :and the base 10 is a transverse shelf or partition 27, a' vertical partition 28 and a plurality of smaller trans verse partitions 29, to form .a set of pigeon holes or receptacles for papers or other articles. Fitting within this space is a holder 33 having a top 34 provided with a plurality of longitudinally directed slots 35 at spaced intervals. The top 34 is sub stantially in alinement with the top 32 of the base, as shown in Fig. 2,-and mounted for rotation within the holder 33 are a plurality of rollers 36, preferably of the spring roller construction, one of the slots 35 being disposed above each of the spring rollers. The rollers 36 are designed to support maps, charts or the like, represented at 37, each map or chart extending through one of the slots 35 and each provided with a stop member 38 and a pull handle 39. The stop member 38 rests upon the upper face of the top 34 of the holder 33 and is held in that position initially by the force of the spring in the roller with which it is associated. By this means the various maps or charts are held normally wound upon the rollers 36 within the holder 33 leaving the stop members 38 and'pull members 39 only exposed above the top 34. The'various maps or charts are thus readily accessible through the open front of the cabinet and may. be drawn outwardly one at atime when required.

- The open front of the cabinet is surrounded by a seat 40 in which a combined desk and blackboard support 41 is adapted to be received when in elevated position. The upper portion of the seat 40 is disposed above the upper line of the frame 17 as shown in Fig. 2, so that when the member 41 is in its closed position it covers and protects the frame 17 and conceals the scroll device 23. a i r 7 One face of the member 41 is provided with a writing surface such as green cloth, oil cloth or the like,'while the other surface is provided with a blackboard or drawingboard surface. Formed in one face of the member 41 are longitudinally directed slots 42, and pivoted at 43 within each of the slots is a link 44. A longitudinally slotted link 45 is pivoted at 46 upon the inner faces of the end members 14 of the cabinet, the two links being pivotally united at 47. The seat 40of the cabinet is provided with bayonet slots 48 near their lowerv ends, and the member '41 is provided witlrlaterally' directed pins 49 adapted to enter the bayonetslots when the member 41 is disposed in the position shown infull lines in Fig. 2, the pins fitting in the upper or vertical portionsof the bayonet slots and thus preventing the member 41 from outward movement away from the cabinet. The bayonet slots 48 are 7 so disposed that when the pins 49 engage therein, the member 41 will be supported intermediate its ends upon the forward edge of the top 32 of the base, or in an inclined position as shown in full lines in Fig. 2, while atthe same time the pins 49 may be readily detached from the bayonet slots to enable the member 41 to be disposed in the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, when the blackboard or. drawing-board face is to be used. Mounted to swing upon the member 41 near one edge is a perforated supporting member 51 adapted to be engaged over hooks 52 projecting from the front edges of the end members 14 of the cabinet. When the member 41 is to be ar ranged with the blackboard or drawing board face outward the pins 49 are detached from the bayonet slots '48 and themember 41 disposed in the position shown by dotted or lines in Fig. -1, the pivot member 47 of the links moving within the slot of the member 45 to permit this movement. When disposed in position to expose the blackboard or drawing-board face of the member 41 the edge carrying the pins 49 is disposed down wardly as shown. When the member 41 is disposed for use as a desk shown in- Figs.

1 and 2 the rounded edge in which the pins 49' are supported comes next to the holder 33, consequently when themaps or charts on the rollers 36 are withdrawn, they bear over the rounded edge of the member 41 and are protected from injury thereby. Any one of the maps on charts may thus be drawn out over the desk member 41 and supported thereby while being usedg'and returned to its position within the holder 33.

Having thus described the-invention, what is claimed as new is:
